February 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread - Games People Play

Day 4: Connect Four

Between 1996 and 2004, Wilco put out four basically perfect albums: Being There, Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and A Ghost is Born (plus the Mermaid Avenue albums, also amazing!). For my money, it's as good as any four-album run in the history of rock and roll.

I don't have Being There on vinyl yet, and I played the second and fourth of these already in recent days (though I'll probably spin 'em again, we'll see how the evening goes), so I'll play probably the most famous of them, even if it's not my favourite.

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Day Four - Connect Four - Think of an artist that had a great four record run. Play any (or all!) of the four

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Spoon is the kind of band where it's become a cliche to discuss how consistently good they have been for so long. For today, I'll say that Girls Can Tell - Kill the Moonlight - Gimme Fiction - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is one killer streak.

IMO they have no bad albums.
I'm very happy there's a new album coming

Awesome. I was starting to play through my four, which is the same except Sky instead of Being There. But that's really close for me, as I do love Being There too.
So, on to my other choice.....

Day 4: Connect 4

I'm sure absolutely NO ONE is surprised with my answer....

Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West, The Moon & Antarctica, Good News for People Who Love Bad News, and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.

I will literally fight anyone who disses WWD because that's my favorite album in their entire discography.
That's my four as well. Some of my favorite music ever.

Stereolab - Dots and Loops

One of my favorite discoveries (and suggestions to me) from the early stages of the pandemic. They became one of my desert island bands within the year. Dots and Loops is my favorite of theirs and also is in my top50 albums of all time.

In the same year, one of my favorite local shops were selling these excellent 3xLP reissues for $24 a pop for a stretch within the year. I've got the stickers on a pair of these titles for posterity. ;)
All four of these albums are great. I'm not huge on Emperor Tomato Ketchup like some are, but it's still a good one.

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly
(Section.80 > good kid, m.A.A.d city > To Pimp A Butterfly > untitled unmastered.)

With Kendrick's catalog, lots of people might skip unititled unmastered and go Section.80 thru DAMN or even include UU and go GKMC thru DAMN. I prefer this line up though. DAMN is really good, but has a few unlistenable songs imo. TPAB, is one of my favorite albums of all time and I considered using it for Day 28, flipping it with a group that could have gone in this place as well. Couldn't play all 4 though since there's still no official pressing if Section.80

I had at least a few in mind that I didn't have some or all of the records to pull off.
Same. Even with Wilco I'd only be able to do through Sky Blue Sky which I don't love. Closest I have other than that is After the Gold Rush > Harvest > On the Beach but I'm missing both Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and Tonight's the Night. Gotta fix these holes, haha.

No surprise here for my pick. Currently spinning Remain in Light but, I'll probably play them all.
There's always time for some Talking Heads.

You can add the next two LPs after that too. :)

And why not also throw in the two live LPs for a run of 8?

My lack of Darkness on The Edge of Town and Nebraska kept me from being able to do any 4 of Springsteen's sweet six from The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle through Born in the U.S.A. And it's going to take a decent bit of time and money yet for me to get my Prince vinyl library anywhere near to the point of my near-complete Prince CD library - I only have 2 albums from his seven-album stunner of a run through most of the 80s. AND I'm missing Secret Treaties to have pulled off Blue Öyster Cult's first four

Super cool prompt @ranbalam! Thanks!
