February 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread - Games People Play

Day Three - The Game of Life - Play a record that deals with or has a song that deals with mortality

This album is all about mortality, Lou wrote it about dealing with the loss of 2 friends over the period of a year, Doc Pomus and "Rita", and the experiences they and he went through.

Some amazing and honest lyrics on this album, but as I've learned over the years the two lines that close the album out are the truest:

There's a bit of magic in everything
and then some loss to even things out

Also included is our well worn game of Life, a game I cannot picture Lou Reed ever playing...

Day Three - The Game of Life - Play a record that deals with or has a song that deals with mortality

Death bookends this record and this song gives me goosebumps every time. Such a beautifully constructed tune, especially this live version - the stillness of reflection and realization of fate gives way to the cacophony of the crash and dissolves into the last beats of the heart. Sublime...

I highly recommend this book, if you haven't read it yet. Crafted around intertwining the historical events of the south and the Truckers history, it delves deep into the "Southern Thing" and spends quite a bit of time covering Southern Rock Opera and Skynyrd.

Day 3 : Life

Ugh, y’all, I am going to see Billie Eilish tonight and I don’t want to play a downer, so I will compromise. With songs like Watch it Die and All Good Soldiers, this album explores the absurdity of the modern condition and how that absurdity gets twisted in ways that harm us—and even lead to our deaths.

@Yer Ol' Uncle D,

I'd like to second this recommendation. A fantastic read and full of great insights!

Risk

This may come as a surprise, but I had not listened to this band before this record and I bought this record not because of the hype machine around it but an elegant post from @GatorJim about how important the band was to him and why this was his most anticipated album of the year.

Willie addresses his own mortality all through this record.

"I don't wanna be the last man standing. Then again, maybe I do."

I don't have the original version my family had from when I grew up, but we played this version a LOT when my son was young.

Day Two - Risk - Play something you bought without listening to first/went in blind.

I was only a couple years old when this album came out and it wasnt something anyone I knew was listening to when I was growing up. But as a teen and young adult, I would always see people online making reference to TTD and to this album. I think I may have even downloaded it but never got around to listening to it. A few years back, I happened to see it while doing some digging at the record store and it was like $5 or something, so I said "What the hell. Let's see."

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass

The Art of Dying
There'll come a time when all of us must leave here
Then nothing sister Mary can do
Will keep me here with you
As nothing in this life that I've been trying
Could equal or surpass the art of dying
Do you believe me?

This is one of my favorite songs on this album. My first couple ideas for today were already played and I ended up glad cause this is really hitting my mood right. Thanks to @Ethos99 for donating this to the pifsgiving prize pool. It really is a masterpiece.
