February 2025 Spin Challenge

Day 1 - Black History Month - Play something by a Black artist, something that has influenced your listening over the years.

One of those albums i go back to that reaffirms that power of live music. Specifically when the audience encourages the band to kick back into Use Me when you think its over, its just a thing of beauty and celebration.

Prince - Dirty Mind

Avi inspo. The Simpsons are the best and Prince is the best. Soon after I got my license, I went for a drive and put on a CD of Prince's Greatest Hits (through a cassette adapter on a walkman) and accidentally hit 90 while getting hype to Uptown. I would have broke 100 but my '98 Buick Century started shaking and I realized what I was doing.

Day 2 - Groundhog Day - Play a cover song.

I am a complete sucker for covers / tribute albums. Love hearing how artists put their own twist and inject their own flavor into others' music.

I could play off this single clue every day and have a blast.

Gonna go with one a little off the beaten path.

This is from a Robby Krieger (The Doors) solo record released in 1982. Robby kept in tune with what was up as this song he covered is barely two years old. He heard a very raucous sound, with his ear down to the ground (sorry, couldn't resist) and nailed this version by injecting a little reggae here and there and some Space Invader sound effects to pay homage to another song on the original release...

I had this when I was in my teens. My copy is long gone; a casualty of too many moves and too many roommates. I should seek out a copy again.

The Brother's Seven "Evil Ways"
Nice and funky version of this song I think I first heard it on one of those random funk mix that seemed to always be floating around the internet in the good old wild west days of piracy! Grabbed this in my "I can't stop buying 45's phase", oh those where the days!

This is just such a great record, and one of the best live ones of all time! Nice pick!

I think you've found the unc cover spin challenge, now to just find a month.

Day 1 - Black History Month - Play something by a Black artist, something that has influenced your listening over the years.

Jimmy Smith "Root Down Jimmy Smith Live!" (1972 Verve; 2024 reissue)
Funky jazz with a ton of energy, recognizable tunes and samples and above all a greasy Hammond B3. Kick-started my fondness for all things with funky organs (yes, yes, pun away if you must).

Charley Pride - Sings Heart Songs

My parents loved coney music and Charley Pride was a large part of that. I remember hearing these songs in the car growing up. And this is their copy of the record.

Bob Kaufman – Rappin Elite

My favourite American poet; his influence on my listening over the years has been more subtle than many but Saul Williams, Moor Mother and R.A.P. Ferreira are all fans who have been influenced by him for sure. And jazz's influence on Bob certainly influenced me in my younger years. Most importantly, for me at least, has been Kaufman's influence on my own poetry - on the surface, and subconsciously. This collection of poems and interviews is new to me, and quite a trip.

Sun Ra – Lights On A Satellite - Live At The Left Bank

Half a dozen covers to choose from, including tunes by Fletcher Henderson, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and more:
  • "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"
  • "Yeah Man"
  • "Big John's Special"
  • "Lady Bird" & "Half Nelson"
  • "Cocktails For Two"
  • "'Round Midnight"
(Technically seven to choose from, in fact, since one tune is two covers in one.)
