February 2025 Spin Challenge

Day 2 - Groundhog Day - Play a cover song.

Perfect timing. The kid and I went thrifting yesterday to find a winter formal dress (which was successful, we paid $8.62 for it!). This was waiting for me at one of the shops, didn't cost much more than the dress. The cover of Powderfinger has so much emotional weight in it.

Charli XCX - BRAT

My most spun record from 2024 by far. I don’t see myself getting tired of it anytime soon.

One of my rules to live by - "Always go to the show." Another rule, it actually could be considered a sub-rule to the previous rule - "Always go see the opener."

Point in case - In the 4th row for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in Charlotte on 10-15-91. Out trots this skinny, stringy haired guy in painted on jeans and a homebrew wifebeater stretched way beyond its means toting a beat to hell dobro. In the next 45 minutes between the crazy vocal range and brilliant guitar work, this guy became one of my favorite artists.

I went with a couple friends, one of whom was totally on my wavelength and recognized what a great moment we were privileged to be a part of. The other couldn't be any farther away from us in opinion. And as it turns out, most of the crowd felt the same way. They wanted nothing to do with what was likely the alien sound of desolate, electric country blues when they were primed for American Girl and Refugee.

Screw them - my buddy and I were right...

Chris struggled finding common ground with his art and the music business. He fought his share of personal demons and was taken out at 45 by lung cancer. In my universe of admired musicians, one of the most crushing losses.

Chris Whitley - Living With The Law

Here's a true, honest documentary about the incredible Chris Whitley. Well worth your time.

This is the initial cut in a little lesser quality...

This is a higher quality edit about 20 minutes shorter than the rough cut. Watch the rough cut first unless you're really pressed for time...

Finally, a hearty tip o' the cap to Tom Petty for recognizing great talent and giving it the opportunity to be seen by tens of thousands.

Wu Tang again? Ah yeah again and again! It's a shame I don't have a clean copy of this but the cassette rarely ever left my walkman when this first came out and then I needed to get it on CD for the car and now it's just something I go back to on streaming and still feel like it's something new and fresh!

Bartees Strange - Live Forever

Bartees has probably been my favorite artist of the last five years or so and often find myself with his songs in my head. More importantly, here's Mulder.

I'll be watching that, thanks for the links! Not sure how I haven't spent time with him. Will remedy soon.

The Clash "London Calling" (1979 Epic Japan)
One of my favourite all-time records (in fact, I had placed this #1 on the list I submitted for our N&G all-time meta list a few years ago). It never strays very far...

You might need to spin this one again in 4 days...

Nirvana - Nevermind

Not sure I'm going to play all 10 LPs today but love the live records off this (and of course the original album, which, as a cliché, reminds me of my own teenage angst and somehow playing Territorial Pissings in the car with my parents).

I think I first discovered this album via WXRT in Chicago when I lived there for a few years in the mid 90's and its never left rotation since then. The harmonies and arrangements on this are just fantastic.
