February 2025 Spin Challenge

Day 3 - National Golden Retriever Day

Nirvana - Nevermind

Not sure I'm going to play all 10 LPs today but love the live records off this (and of course the original album, which, as a cliché, reminds me of my own teenage angst and somehow playing Territorial Pissings in the car with my parents).

PLAY THEM ALL!!!! It really is a great box set. I need to see the In Utero for an amazing deal so I can grab that too.

Day 3 - National Golden Retriever Day - Play a record that you keep coming back to, like that retriever endlessly chasing the ball.

I think I first discovered this album via WXRT in Chicago when I lived there for a few years in the mid 90's and its never left rotation since then. The harmonies and arrangements on this are just fantastic.

Yeah, it's only been out for a week and a half, but I've listened to it at least 25 times during said week and a half so it counts, dammit!

I'll participate for at least a few days.

Day 1 - Black History Month - Play something by a Black artist, something that has influenced your listening over the years.

Alice Coltrane - Ptah, the El Daoud

Despite having a contentious relationship with jazz music (especially with owning too many jazz LPs) over the past three years, Alice will always be a mainstay.
She is one of my top50 artists all time.

Day 2 - Groundhog Day - Play a cover song.

Björk - Post

"It's Oh So Quiet" was originally recorded by Betty Hutton in 1951. Yes, I know it is firmly out of place with the record's electronic/trip-hop focus and even hated by some. But the daring eccentricity and unpredictability, alternating between wonderful restraint and equally wonderful lunacy is among the most joyous moments I've ever come across on an art pop record.

Definitely could have spun the Headhunters again. But this is always readily available for a spin...

Khruangbin - Con Todo El Mundo

Astrid Sonne - Great Doubt

My #5 last year. I had it in rotation early in the year but it fell out around June or so; revisiting back in October had me fawning over its singular, unconventional song composition once again. Just under 27min long and in this time, the Danish singer/songwriter and violist traverses an art pop landscape with a trip-hop, electroacoustic, and ambient pop Venn diagram connecting it all together. Hypnotic and mystifying. "Give My All" and "Everything Is Unreal" are a pair of my favorite songs of 2024. I've played this a lot at work in lieu of trying 2025 releases.
Very excited to see her in Portland just a few days before taking off to Japan for spring vacation. Hoping to get this inked by Astrid before/after.

And I'll probably buy this again if they release it with some difference...like a 2 LP 45 cut of the Steven Wilson mix. I don't really have a way to play the Atmos Blu Ray release, but I still got it.

Day 4 - Rosa Parks Day - Play something that stood it's ground, and fought for what's right.

He seems to have something to say when something needs to be said.

If you're going to stand up for something make sure even the people not listening can hear you! PE has been fighting the good fight forever and sadly their themes are still as relevant today as they were back then!

This concert was held 7 years to the day after the Watts Uprising and set to commemorate that event and the societal awareness that came from it. Every movement has a start.
