February 2025 Spin Challenge

It seems that every day of the year has about a hundred different National Day Of something, holidays, or some kind of celebration/remembrance. We will look through some of those and see if we can find some music to connect to them. And who knows, maybe you hear about one of the events and go out and support a local business or charity that connects that day.

I'm gonna pick someone that plays at least once in February a new record of my choosing. Might be my album of the year for 2024, might be one that I just enjoy turning people on too.

Play up and play hard!

I'll argue to most anyone who'll listen without beating me up that this is the most important moment in forming American and British music. The influence of folk blues permeates damn near every genre out there. I'll take raw emotion over polished playing every day of the week. This music and all influenced by it has flawlessly guided me for over 6 decades...

Prince - Sign O’ the Times

I can’t remember not being aware of Prince’s music. He was one of those foundational to “my” music artists - along with Peter Gabriel and David Bowie. He spoke to me, made me question what I knew about music and set me up to love a lot of the music I love today.

Day 1 - Black History Month

Miles Davis - 1958 Miles

It's hard to express how much I love Miles. I think I'd happily give up all my other jazz records just to have his (it probably helps I have 70 of his records). This is one of my favourite (it's about to be reissued more or less as Birth Of Blue) as it's all the non-Kind of Blue from the Kind of Blue band. As good as jazz gets. And the Japanese pressing is immaculate as always.

Haven’t been listening to records as much lately, but I could use a distraction from the madness that’s been going on in my country.

Perfect Saturday Morning Record. Cody made an album that is equal parts Prince and Bob Pollard. I remember discovering him prior to him blowing up following his collaborations with The Roots on “The Seed 2.0”. When The Strokes were at the height of their popularity he was a buddy of the band and the song “Look Good In Leather” was on my “getting ready to go out” CD-R mix for much of 2002.

This album has influenced me in a few ways; my listening, awareness, as well as music making. It's drenched in feeling, and the grooves are fantastic.

He opened with a 3-piece band the first time I saw The Roots and they absolutely shredded. It was awesome. And he was sick as fuck too, drinking orange juice out of the carton. He came back out for The Roots' encore and did "The Seed 2.0" with them. It was awesome!

Incidentally, Concert Archives just informed me that the second time I saw The Roots was 18 years ago today

That woulda been awesome to see live. Prime ChestnuTt and The Roots.

My intro was initially this…

…It was a Strokes show filmed by Roman Coppola for the MTV2 live concert series $2 Dollar Bill Concert. For some reason Julian pulled Cody up on stage just to be a cool motherfucker during “Last Nite” I think his appearance there inspired MTV News to do a profile spot on him and they played “Looks Good In Leather” which was like the coolest song I had ever heard. I remember being so stoked to find a copy of the MP3 on Napster.

Oh, the early 00s were the halcyon days weren’t they?

Just went through my collection to see what I hadn't played at all or in a very long time. I played their self-titled release, but not this and their 3rd album. Both were still sealed until just now. I may play Struttin' on the spinning thread later if I get some time.

Day 1: Black History Month

Imma try to keep rolling with this theme (i.e. highlighting Black artists) as much as I can this month in honour of BHM.

Otis Redding - The Dock of the Bay

The music of Otis Redding & Stax Records have had a big influence on the majority of music I’ve been listening to over the last 6 or so years.

Run DMC "Raising Hell"
This was the first cassette I bought with my own money and the first group that opened my eyes and ears to hip hop music. This lead to a lot of rap music in my life which lead me to funk and soul and all kinds of different genres of music, and I am forever grateful for that!
