Shabaka and the Ancestors - We Are Sent Here By History

Well, this is supremely embarrassing. When I posted the above, I thought I'd actually bought this album. It was only when I shelved it that I realised I had bought the first album again (and listened to it twice). I'm sure there's a parable in there about having too many records. But I bought the right record this time, and am looking forward to listening to songs I haven't heard yet! 😂🤪

Some nice new additions to the family again today. We have:

Masta Ace - Disposable Arts (Blue Variant)
Hizuru (Purple Variant) - thank you to @Selaws who had it in their recent spins and got me curious.
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (Single LP, AP, Mono)

Ah brilliant! Glad I was able to spread the J-jazz love a bit, it really is a great album!

If you want to feel better my first Discogs order I was figuring out how it all worked. Ordered a Japanese copy of After The Gold Rush making sure it had the obi and was in good condition. Very excited to find it and lock it down!

..then realised you can just search for that version and there was a (from the description) seemingly better version for £5 less..

..then realised what I'd actually bought was a CD and now that's currently enjoying a trip somewhere between Japan and England lol 😂

I hope you enjoy the new Shabaka release, it's definitely one I have in my sights.

no worries, there's always the PIF for your duplicate copies!
;)

Seems to be in stock. I cancelled my JPC.de order and ordered from HHV. I received a 5% discount this morning so it was right on time. Of course I added a couple of records because, you know, it "reduces" shipping costs... Right?
that's my standard train of thought....

add more records.... to save on shipping.

solid thinking,
which is one of the reason of I'm not an accountant.

Ambient pickups:

Eluvium - Pianoworks
Eluvium - Virga I
Jon Hassell - Vernal Equinox
Don Slepian - Sea Of Bliss
Leo Takami - Felis Catus & Silence

20200501_031533.jpg

Both of these Eluvium LPs were released last year and each, conveniently, have an appropriate time to be played. Pianoworks is a stunning collection of slow-moving, graceful pieces from a solo namesake instrument; ideal for painting, coding, and for menial housekeeping. Virga I is the first in a drone ambient three-part series; ideal for the current predicament we find ourselves in: isolation. Time feels as if it stops while this ~42min LP plays, ironically.
The long-awaited reissue of Jon Hassell's seminal excursion into the blurred lines between avant-garde jazz and tribal music is transcendent. This one is selling out among a lot of storefronts, including Amazon.
Never heard of Don Slepian prior to this year but was turned onto this record from a recommendation earlier. Each side has a single ~24 min track which pairs nicely with stargazing. So cosmic and celestial in its timbre.
One of my surprise favorite records of this year, Leo Takami concocted a very cute and comfy new age project, which pairs delightfully with the adorable front cover. @kvetcha and @blissfullychaotic, perhaps this would tickle your fancy?

Jazz pickups:

Alabaster DePlume - To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1
Moses Boyd - Dark Matter
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Schawkie Roth - Fortune

20200501_030942.jpg

I was skeptical of trying more modern jazz works, but To Cy & Lee lands in my top 10 albums of the year for now. The progression of the majority of the record plays out like one cohesive avant-garde statement...very engrossing and rich with detail. I was almost tempted to file this in my ambient folder due to the music blending in so well with the background but ultimately had it relegated to where it should be.
Dark Matter continues to wow me with every listen. Very ecstatic to have this electronic-jazz record with a bevy of various musicians/voices lending their contributions to a unique project. Like the previous record, this is also in my top 10 for the time being; so much energy present here! Only complaint is that the splatter variant looks hideous.
A cheap uDiscover order for the long-standing Coltrane masterwork was made early in the month. Little needs to be said here.
Ohhh boy. Absolutely LOVING this Schawkie Roth gem. A spiritual, soothing listen. Got a sealed OG copy of this for $18. Tip-on sleeve and a featherweight LP make for vintage packaging at its finest.

Miscellaneous pickups:

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Candy Claws - Ceres & Calypso In The Deep Time
Julia Holter - Ekstasis

Good to have MBDTF in the inconvenient format, even if the decision to make this a 3xLP was absolutely boneheaded. Sound quality is sub-par (and honestly, quite bad), but I knew that going in. One of my top 10 of the '10s, so my rationale is kept in check.
Glad to get this '19 reissue of the classic shoegaze record from SoundOfVinyl for under $12!! It holds a candle to the more long-standing classics in the genre any day.
Another pickup from SoundOfVinyl is this somewhat hard to find record from Julia Holter, my favorite artist of the '10s. Honestly, probably my least favorite of hers (although I still enjoy it). "Boy In the Moon" is a top 10 song of hers for me.

Going to pick up both those Eluvium's today, half way tempted to buy the box set as well!

Going to give Jon and Leo a listen today during work and think about getting those as well!

Love the write-up as well, never heard of Don and now I need to check out his stuff as well! It's going to be a productive Friday ~
