Fresh Grabs

I've been anticipating this for a while, its possibly the greatest set of records I will ever receive in one go and certainly amongst the rarest. A few weeks ago I started chatting to a guy who is managing the estate for Tony Hall. Tony was a legend in the UK music scene and amongst his many accolades includes:
- Amongst the first to record Tubby Hayes and the Jazz Couriers (way before he became a well-known musician).
- A prolific writer for the NME.
- One of the first major promoters for Decca.
- He produced an album by trumpeter Dizzy Reece, released on Blue Note.
- Signed Black Sabbath to Vertigo.
- Promoted Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Dusty Springfield, the Zombies, etc.
After chatting for a while, the executor offered up several of Tonys personal records, all of which are promo/sample copies, and some of which Tony had a direct involvement in. After haggling back and forth I got these for a superb price, and they really are amongst the rarest I will ever see.

Milt Jackson / Percy Heath / Barney Wilen / Kenny Clarke - Paris Session (Philips, 1958 First UK Sample/Promo Pressing)
Bobby Hutcherson - Un Poco Loco (Columbia, 1980 First Sample/Promo Pressing)
Charlie Parker - The Magnificent Charlie Parker (Clef Records, 1955 First Mono Pressing)
Ronnie Scott & Tubby Hayes - The Couriers Of Jazz (Carlton, 1958 First Pressing) - Credits Tony Hall as Producer
The Red Mitchell Harold Land Quintet - Hear Ye!!!! Hear Ye!!!! (Atlantic, 1962 First Sample/Promo Pressing)
Lester Young With The Oscar Peterson Trio - S/T (Columbia, 1955 First Sample/Promo 10" Pressing)
Kenny Dorham And The Jazz Prophets - S/T (His Masters Voice, 1957 First UK Sample/Promo 10" Pressing)
Fats Navarro - New Sounds In Modern Music - Volume 1 (Savoy Records, 1952 First 10" Pressing)
Clifford Brown And Max Roach - S/T (Emarcy, 1954 First 10" Pressing)

And to add to the haul above, here are a few more from the past couple of weeks:

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (Impulse Records, 1965 First Stereo Club Edition)
I picked this upgrade up after seeing great reviews for the Club pressing. In fact, the American mastering engineer, Steve Hoffman, claims this is the best pressing.

Archie Shepp - Steam (Enja, 1976 First Pressing)
Bobby Timmons - Got To Get It! (Milestone, 1968 First Pressing)
Modern Jazz - Hall Of Fame Volume 1 (Design Records, 1957 First Compilation Pressing)
Memphis Slim - Lonesome (Swing, 1974 French Pressing)
Ella Fitzgerald - The Best Of Ella Volume One (Ace Of Hearts, 1962 First Mono Pressing)
The Metronome All-Star Bands - S/T (RCA, 1959 First Mono Pressing)
Masayoshi Takanaka - Seychelles (Kitty Records, 1976 First Japanese Pressing)

A bunch of oddities here, from carboot finds to a late birthday gift. Killer stuff!

A Love Supreme - The Creation Of John Coltrane's Classic Album by Ashley Kahn
Kind Of Blue - The Making Of The Miles Davis Masterpiece by Ashley Kahn

Depeche Mode - The Singles 81 —> 85

This album was a bit of a white whale for me - not super expensive but really hard to find outside of Europe with the original inner sleeve intact. I bought a copy new as a kid in high school and somewhere along the line lost it - when I got back into vinyl around 10 years ago I started the hunt to find a replacement copy. Was ecstatic to find a copy in really good shape from a seller in the US for $25 shipped.

Polly approves!

Insane score, man! I'd be interested to hear how you feel that copy of Love Supreme stacks up against any others you have. I thought I'd found a deal on an '68 pressing a little while back, but when I got it had the LW engraved, but no Van Gelder. Still sounds pretty good, as I recall. And those Downbeats!!! I came straight from seeing your Instagram post to check out the details here and you left out most of the goods!

Every week you start a post with this sentence. You should have your own Fresh Selaws' Grabs thread. Great haul! Congrats!
N@G should have a podcast. I would absolutely listen to @Selaws talk about his hauls, the history behind the records, why their important, etc. I'd listen to a gear discussion between @AnthonyI & @HiFi Guy . @Joe Mac could have a panel discussion debating the best Radiohead album of all time, @Mather could host "Warps n' Cables". I`m not joking, somebody make it happen

You know, this has crossed my mind on occasion ;)

Im excited for this too. The other copy I have is a 1968 pressing which I have always been confused by. It has an LW etched into the deadwax which supposedly looks to only appear on white label promo's (which this isnt). Anyway, I read up about the Club Edition and it has mixed reviews. A lot of the 'purists' seem to disregard it straight away (without even hearing it) but of all the comments that I have seen where people actually listened to it, they tend to rate it very highly. I even found one comment by Steve Hoffman where he says he prefers it to the RVG master. Not entirely sure what to think, but im looking forward to listening anyway.

Haha, I've got to save some stuff for the N&G fam! Seriously though, Im going to end up posting each record on my instagram at some point. Researching the stories associated with these albums is all part of the fun for me!

Ah man this would be cool, I love a good podcast! Although, not sure if anyone could sit through a whole session of my northern voice droning on :ROFLMAO:
