Fresh Grabs

Had an outrageously great haul from todays carboot sale. Bit of a backstory, I have seen this guy a handful of times over the past couple of years and he always has some killer stuff. I had this stack ready to buy (everything in these photos including the Dylan bootleg) which should have come out just shy of £50 (£25 for the Dylan Bootleg, £7 for the Grateful Dead, £2 each for the rest - which is crazzzzzy cheap considering all the records themselves don't have a mark on them). We chatted more and he said that he's always hoping that the people that buy from him are going to actually take care of the records and play them rather than just putting them on the wall etc. We compared favourite artists and just chatted about music for a good half an hour. I asked him how much he wanted for all of them and he just said £20. I did a double take and explained that I wanted the full stack and he said he just wanted £20 as the chat we had was worth the difference and he's happy to see them going to a good home. Still cant believe it, I was in shock at such a great deal.

Grateful Dead ‎– Wake Of The Flood / From The Mars Hotel (United Artists Records, 1977 UK pressing) - My first Grateful Dead album
The Incredible Jimmy Smith ‎– Back At The Chicken Shack (Cadre Rouge Audiophile Edition - DMM, 1985 US pressing)
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (Winchester first Pressing, textured sleeve, inserts, 1977)
Charley Christian - The Immortal Charley Christian (1966 - Thelonious Monk on keys)
The Rolling Stones ‎– England's Newest Hit Makers (1964 Mono pressing)
- Would be worth decent money if the cover wasn't burnt
Steely Dan - Aja (1977 UK first pressing)
The Beach Boys - All Summer Long (1965 UK pressing)
Pet Shop Boys - Introspective (1988 UK first pressing)
- This will end up on the PIF thread as I checked and actually have a copy already)
Stax 12" (Isaac Hayes & Johnny Taylor on A side, William Bell & Booker T and the MG's on the B side)

And the unusual pick-up.
Bob Dylan - Inside the Museums (1982 Bootleg. 12x12 'Zappa' insert. 04/50 on Splatter/Tie Dye.) - @Joe Mac and @Murfocakes have you ever seen this boot before? I found the following website that has a bit of info on it. Interesting find anyway.

I love the colour of that bootleg Pressing! I haven’t heard of that pressing before but then I’m not really a big bootleg hunter tbh!

That’s quite some haul and a great story, it’s great to see music fans looking after each other!

Great album to start your way into the Dead. So many great songs on that one. 💀🌹

The Silver Label MoFi's are always a crap shoot, let us know what you think.
So far I'm enjoying it. It is definitely master low which I had heard. But just turn the volume up right? I heard it was flat but I don't know....sounds good to me. It favors bass like you always heard modern pressings do. I have an OOP and, honestly, I'd choose this one if I could only keep one.

The only other silver label I have is the Echo & the Bunnymen Heaven Up Here and it's really good. I hear the silver label of Tears for Fears "Songs from the Big Chair" is bad but I have the '14 pressing and an OOP so haven't really given much thought to trying out the MOFI.
It must really be a crapshoot because I have the Silver Label The Seeds of Love and it sounds great. I'm glad I never looked to upgrade my OP Songs From the Big Chair - like most 80's albums it's flimsy as hell but sounds great.

Oh brilliant thats just what I was hoping to hear. Im a complete novice when it comes to the Grateful Dead, I haven't even heard a song by them yet, so glad to hear this is a good place to start!
“Let Me Sing Your Blues Away” is the worst song on there and I still like that one. Side B is great, and “Weather Report Suite” is one of the crowning achievements for their songwriting. Up there with “Terrapin Station.”

Also, “Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodeloo” and “Eyes Of The World” are some of my favorites. “Stella Blue” is gorgeous.

I’m interested in your thoughts, and if you’re curious as where to go next I am more than willing to help. 👍

When I attempt to provide a Grateful Dead novice with a studio album primer usually start with American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead which aren’t super representative but are great country rock albums that are super easy to digest. If they like those and are still interested, the next level up I usually tell them to check out Blues For Allah, Wake of the Flood, and Mars Hotel. I defer to others on here that are way more knowledgeable than I all things Dead (especially the live shows) for further depth.

Brilliant, cheers guys. I will listen to it later today and let you know what I think. Pretty excited as they are a band I have heard people get excited by for years but I've never listened to myself

Afternoon Amazon France delivery. The latest in the Tone Poet series. As @Mather pointed out earlier in the week, Amazon have started going overboard on the packaging of their records. This is the 5th in a couple of weeks that I have had delivered this way, the amount of waster packaging is crazy.

Lou Donaldson - Mr. Shing-A-Ling LP (Blue Note Tone Poet Series, 2019)

My last two from Amazon came the same way but with a little smaller outer box. Not sure if they record boxes were getting damaged or this is detract from theft, but there's got to be a reason behind it. My guess is they were getting tired of replacing records for sleeve damage.

I believe this is my first Fresh Groob post in the new place. I’ve gotten some groobs since mid-May but never bother posting.

These are from a vintage shop in Portland, Maine.

The Smiths is an OG US pressing in pristine condition. I did a Discogs check in the shop to see if the price of $39 was worth it. There are “VG-/VG+” copies going for $25~ and NM would be more than $40 or $50.

I never see Jonathan Richman albums in shops so I had to get it too.
