Fresh Grabs

What’s the deal with that New Order?
Haha I knew someone would ask. It’s Substance, but apparently it came in with a destroyed cover. One of the clerks suggested making a cover for it and trying to sell it for $10! I already have it but a friend of mine has been searching for it. When I saw it was $10 and both LPs were very clean, I knew I was gonna buy it. I offered it to my friend who snatched it up. $10 for a NM- copy sans cover is a steal for that. The clerk who rang me up said he was glad I grabbed it and happy to learn it was going to someone who really wanted it. I love the peeps at PREX and love how awesome they are to me.

that's awesome and definitely a good deal. I miss shopping at PREX, my work no longer takes me nearby.

That is so cool! And not far off the actual cover.

I got this with a gatefold cover ruined by water & mildew/mold. So I cut the cover apart, kept just the front & back, sprayed bleach cleaner on the white paper sides of each. I cleaned and put the 2 LPs into new inner and outer sleeves. Then, when the covers dried, I slipped them inside a poly bag. 8B5E6F51-EB3E-412C-ABD1-E244BC6D3D00.jpeg

The Alan Skidmore Quintet - TCB (Philips, 1970 First Pressing)
Ian Carr's Nucleus - Roots (Veritgo, 1973 First Pressing)

I have been after the TCB for a while but it rarely seems to pop up for sale. I jumped on this copy when it did and managed to get it for a decent price, especially considering the stunning condition it is in. I already have a copy of Nucleus' Roots but it’s not the best copy and I was able to gamble on this super affordable copy. The seller only showed a few poor quality photos and it turns out it is indeed a first pressing in super shape, certainly a great upgrade.

Joe Harriott Qunitet - Southern Horizons (Jazzland, 1960 First Sample Pressing)
The Michael Garrick Sextet - Prelude To Heart Is A Lotus (Gearbox Records, 2013 First Pressing)
Jackie McLean - Tippin’ The Scales (Blue Note, 1979 First Japanese Pressing)

A couple more British jazz killers. Southern Horizons is a superb album from Harriott that features Shake Keane on trumpet. This one has a sample ‘approved’ stamp on the rear cover. Heart Is A Lotus was released by Gearbox a few years back now and has great reviews. Finally, I lucked out on this great Japan-only BN from McLean.

I just noticed that I used a lot of "check it out" in this post. (Don't check it out please).

I think my Shakira albums are finally getting here next Wednesday. VMP took forever to ship those out.

I had the pleasure of seeing Nerija and Charles Lloyd live at the Barbican yesterday. I actually work 2 mins walk away from the Barbican but as we mainly work from home now I only pop into work every now and again so I haven't been there in a while. Before the gig, we wandered around and I remembered that the Church often has a book sale so we popped over to look. Not only did we both get some books but they also had a few crates of records crammed with jazz. I probably would have picked up more if I wasn't going to the gig (might go back early next week to see if I missed anything), but I'm still pretty damn happy with these unexpected finds.

Miles Davis - Porgy And Bess (Columbia, 1959 First Stereo Pressing)
Nina Simone - Nina Simone At Town Hall (Pye International, 1961 First UK Mono Pressing)
Wes Montgomery – A Day In The Life (A&M Records, 1967 First UK Stereo Pressing)
Gerry Mulligan Quartet - Spring Is Sprung (Philips, 1963 First UK Pressing)
Miles Davis - Miles Davis In Europe (CBS, 1964 First UK Mono Pressing)
Gerry Mulligan And The Concert Jazz Band - At The Village Vanguard (His Master's Voice, 1961 First UK Mono Pressing)

And here's a bonus shot of me digging through the books in the very atmospheric church light :ROFLMAO:

The 2 Mingus Acoustic Sounds reissues
Steve Earle - Townes Basics reissue
Makaya McCraven - Deciphering the Message

That should be all my pre-orders for the rest of 2021 (except the Bowie box, Steve Earle - Townes, Herbie Nichols and Kenny Cox reissues, but shhh I am hoping to sneak those in past my wife. Also forgot the Mogwai reissue and Paul Weller - Illumination. Crap, more than I thought.)

Great jazz records there and the Miles Davis book is superb, Ian Carr was massively influenced by Miles and became pretty fanatical about hearing everything he recorded. The book is one of the better ones out there for sure.
