Fresh Grabs

Your Record Store or Goodwill? I think people will sell off chunks of their collection for cash or credit to their local record store as VMP albums tend to do pretty good in the secondary market. Goodwill is strictly donation based. Most folks donate things to Goodwill don’t have much resale value. A stack of Jim Nabors record to Goodwill makes sense but someone donating over $100 worth of VMP albums is usually someone doesn’t understand what they have and what to do with it.
Or some disgusted partner (or ex-partner!) of a record collector has taken the low road! :p

Stopped in a random record shop in the Catskills area today after a pub lunch. Prices were all over the place. They had a solid selection of jazz albums but some were WAY too pricey. Others were surprisingly cheap. This is what I walked out with:

OG mono deep groove pressing:

The Sound were brilliant.
I've been sort of looking for their records. From the Lions Mouth is supposed to be great. From what I can see, their vinyl tends to be on the expensive side, so I was pretty surprised to find this in a cheap bin.

Definitely a good find!

I only have ‘All Fall Down’ on vinyl. Had some earlier (mid-2000s) CD reissues but sold them when I got the two CD boxsets that Demon did that collect everything up.

‘From the Lions Mouth’ is very good.

It was a good day :)

1st, not that I'm a KISS fan by any stretch, I do like a few songs, but was never part of the army. I have always liked Beth, probably more so because of how much they hated it and it turned out to be their biggest commercial success, lol. An OG Casablanca Detroit Rock City with the Beth B Side.

And the real "shocker".........Electro-Shock Blues has been added to the collection :)

A big thank you to @nolalady and @LeSamourai for the Irreversible Entanglements and Talking Heads records, respectively. Both arrived promptly and in great shape.

Ambient pickups

Harold Budd - The Pavilion of Dreams
Patricia Wolf - I'll Look for You in Others (signed)
20220228_225549.jpg

Went to a record store for the first time in 2022 on Sunday and was shocked to see the Harold Budd reissue from Superior Viaduct on the shelves a week before its official release date. A bit pricy for a 1xLP, but upon trading in two junk records that would never have gotten play from me, I knocked the total price down to $12. Can't wait to give this majestic record a spin later down the line in the collection playthrough...this was amazing to listen to at work.
Bought the Patricia Wolf LP as part of my Bandcamp Friday purchases for February. Like the Budd record above, I also haven spun this one yet. Happy that she signed the LP at my request. Excited to see her w/KMRU + Fennesz later in March, should be a stellar set.

Current year pickups

Black Country, New Road - Ants From up There
Bonobo - Fragments
Amber Mark - Three Dimensions Deep
yeule - Glitch Princess
20220228_225953.jpg

Black Country, New Road's follow up is extravagant and amazing. Love this album oh so much, currently 2022 AotY.
New record from Bonobo is a jam and the red marbled pressing came out well. He's coming to Portland in March...might get a ticket before long.
LOVE the Amber Mark debut. Beyond excited to see her in an intimate venue a week before my birthday!!! 🤗
Newest one from yeule is also wonderful. Fascinating hybrid of ambient pop/glitch pop/industrial pop, which is a leap of change from Serotonin II's consistent ambient pop style. Will be seeing them in a month.

Miscellaneous pickups

Circuit Des Yeux - In Plain Speech (signed)
Circuit Des Yeux - Reaching For Indigo (signed)
Brandee Younger - Somewhere Different (signed)
20220228_230211.jpg

All of these above are conveniently signed from having seen both in concert, also at the same venue! I'll have to post Circuit Des Yeux concert details tomorrow or in the coming days, very riveting show despite a few hiccups. In Plain Speech was purchased for Bandcamp Friday, and Reaching for Indigo was bought after CDY's show. It isn't pictured, but I also had Haley Fohr (Circuit Des Yeux) sign my copy of her album from last year, -io, but that one was acquired last year.
Brandee Younger (w/Dezron Douglas) concert was also fantastic, as I had won a drawing for a pair of tickets!

Went on a little retail therapy trip to a couple locals, and a couple preorders showed up. Just what I needed.

Joe Henderson - Inner Urge
Lee Morgan - Caramba!
Fela Ransome-Kuti and Ginger Baker - Live!
The Red Garland Trio - Groovy
Neil Young - Harvest
Tom Waits - Closing Time
Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis (ROG)
Elliott Smith - s/t
Laura Mauling - A Creature I Don't Know
Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim
Brad Barr - The Winter Mission
Bowerbirds - Hymns For A Dark Horse
Vincent Neil Emerson - Fried Chicken and Evil Women
Crooked Fingers - Red Devil Dawn

Shakey: Neil Young’s Biography
by Jimmy McDonough
Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand

I picked up some good stuff this month. Some nice Alternative and Punk reissues. Some nice OGs; Steely Dan, Tom Petty, and The Beach Boys we’re all super clean. The Beach Boys is a twofer but I purchased more for 20/20. I already own a nice Mono reissue of Wild Honey but 20/20 standalone copies are getting a bit pricey and I was able to pick this up for $10. I have two Os Mutantes because I have been looking for a good Brazilian copy for years and finally gave up and purchased a copy that was put out by Russian label, Lilith. Of course not more than a week later my local got in a clean 2015 Brazilian reissue, so I picked up that one also. So now I have two. The two 2022 releases by Black Country, New Road and Big Thief will likely be on my AOTY short list. The Neil Young Biography was a Valentines gift from my SO (she’s the best!) and lastly I couldn’t resist picking up Bee Thousand on cassette tape it seems like the format it was meant for.
