Fresh Grabs

it says "remastered from new high-res analogue transfers" on the hype sticker. I have no problem with mastering digitally if it's done right. I have plenty of digitally remastered albums that sound fantastic (the Bruce Plangent remasters and KG Van Morrison remasters come to mind). Dean Rudland, who works with Ace (but didn't work on this specific album), says over on Hoffman that it was cut from high-res WAV files from the original master tape.

I just listened to the 2005 Ace Remaster, as well as a needledrop of the White Label Promo from 1971. Both are way more dynamic sounding than this version. It almost seems like a mistake.
Ah, they purposely left out “masters.”

a new high res analog transfer could be a needle drop capture at higher than 16/44.

I'd been holding off of picking up any copies in hopes that a better pressing would happen - which I really hoped this one would be... I'm pretty bummed even though i still have another couple of weeks to wait for mine.
I also just don't think the originals are any kind of audiophile albums. they used so much dubbing that I think a lot of quality was sacrified. but it still doesn't make sense why this one sounds so much worse than even the earlier Ace Records pressing that I have the needledrop of.

The guy who works at Ace over at Hoffman forums says it's a transfer from the master tape:

i don't entirely buy it. something weird happened either in the transfer or in the mix/remaster.

Any chance the needledrop is in FLAC files and you could share them with me? 24 bit-96k files would be an extra bonus.

I think weTransfer will let you send up to 2GB for free.

I got a a 24/96 FLAC of the 1971 White Label Promo that i'll upload if you want?

I'd be curious to hear the 2005 as well though! I know for myself, hearing the 71 version just showed me how great this could sound if handled right as it doesn't have to be audiophile level just bring it to life a bit!

edit.. I just went and ahead and uploaded it since it was so quick... superstupidmaggotbrain.rar

I was gonna offer up making a rip of my OG copy, then I saw what was used to make that rip you posted, and then I looked at my setup…

I’ll PM you tomorrow about the 2005. Agree—it just needs some loving to make it sound good and livelier. This new one ain’t it.

haha yeah, it blows my setup away as well to say the least.

If you happen to download it i'm kind of curious to hear from someone with an actual OG copy on if they feel it represents it well? At least you got the cheat code with an actual slab of vinyl! The only one i've seen at a record store was pretty beat up and still $100+.

I have an OP with a horrible scuff. Like I didn’t think it would play through. But it does (with a whoosh) so it’s probably like a regular VMP non-issue. ;)

I don’t know when I can make time, but if I can squeeze it in, I’ll try to do a *modest* needle-drop and share. Or I will hunt a lossless capture at the HiRes message board I’m on. Everyone has better gear than me. :)

I’ll probably give it a listen at work tomorrow and then spin my copy after work and A/B it to see how the other half lives 😂

Ebay was the Wild West in the late 00s-early ‘10s when it came to vinyl. Mine is a VG+ record/VG sleeve.

a bit of a VMP level whooshing Maggot Brain still beats the majority of the reissues i'm sure! No need to go out of your way but your needle drop sounds like it would be closer to my setup anyways if you get the chance sometime!

Lawwwd, that's a hell of a price! I def. remember those long lost days on ebay as well, nicely played sir!

There's an app/online-marketplace called Depop which now focuses on fashion but when they first started it seemed like 90% of sellers were teenagers selling off their unplayed records for beer money. A lot of the sellers bought the records to put up on their walls so they were unplayed and in some cases sealed. Some of my bargain purchases include:

Funkadelic – Maggot Brain. 2014 pressing on peach vinyl for £10.

A 4lp bundle that cost £40 which included a 2007 misprint pressing of MF Doom – MM..Food (I sold that for £45 before his passing - it then jumped up to an average of £90) and a red pressing of The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (I sold that at the same time as Doom for £50).

Beyoncé - ST. Original pressing which was unplayed. I bought it for £10 for my fiancée but she was uninterested so I later sold it for £75. A decent chunk of cash but it now goes for £125.

I dont think I used Ebay quite as far back as the late 2010's but even 5 years ago deals were there to be had. I bought a copy of Kano's Made In The Manor for £15 and it now goes for £100 (theres 1 for sale on Cogs for £170). Its just madness.

eBay really was such a great place to buy records back in the early 2010s, especially jazz records. People weren’t into it nearly as much as they are now. I got a bundle of an OG Stereo of A Love Supreme and a His Masters Voice pressing of A Love Supreme for $11 shipped. Got an early pressing of Coltrane - Ascension for $6 shipped. Tons of stuff like that was extremely cheap. Now you can’t get a beat up Impulse album by Coltrane for under $40 it seems. Fees were less then for sellers so more people sold and less people wanted jazz records. Wish I had the foresight to buy way more but I was a college student then without a lot of disposable income and had only recently gotten back into buying records.

I have mixed feelings, my reissue is at the post office box awaiting pickup today.

My NM copy of MB is this, which honestly sounds good, and I'll give it an A/B listen with the new one, perhaps.

Speaking of cheap online pickups, here's a secret tip: try third party Amazon sellers. I scored two different first presses of The Stooges s/t album for under 25 each in 2015 and 2017. I can't say how often deals turn up, but it can't hurt to check. I think I used CamelCamelCamel alerts at the time.

That WLP promo rip was done by pbthal, who also contributed to the HRM message board. His rips are usually nice.

Found his rip on YT

Still can't believe I picked up Eno's Film Music double lp for $11 from a 3rd party seller. Gritted my teeth, but nothing was wroing with it whatsoever.
