Fresh Grabs

Whenever I pick up a new Tone Poet, I already know it’s going to sound good. Nothing beats that moment when you first drop the needle and the luscious, warm sound washes over you. This release is no different.

Yeah, the Tone Poets always sound good! Personally, I like the crackling sound from the jacket when you first open the gatefold. It's the sound of a quality Stoughton jacket.

although I will concede that they are CDs and not big black circles, these Herbie boxes (on the left) set me back....160?ish and encompass almost the entirety of the man's recorded output (sir-not-appearing-in-this-film-yet: River). the warner box is basically the mwandishi period, blue note is self evident and the columbia box is just....an absolute monster. it is tragic how much better vmp could've done theirs.

Fresh Grabbers who have used them, what's your experience with Record City in Japan? Worth it? Think I can get some stuff much cheaper than here in Oz, but not jumped yet. Sure they will be fine, but just want to make sure.

No experience personally but I've definitely seen positive words for them on here. I think in the "I did a thing" thread most recently...

Not sure for Oz, but for Canada they use FedEx. Usually 3 records is the sweet spot. Anything more and there is a big shipping price jump. Plus have not been hit with any duty or brokerage fees on orders.
Lucky I’m looking at 3 records!!

If all my costings work out I can get 3 Japanese Led Zep pressings for the price of 1 sourced here. Might be quality differences, obviously, but I’m not looking for perfection here!

I got a full set of Led Zep pressings from them and are super happy. I haven't quite ordered as much as @Joe Mac from them, but still a lot and haven't had any issues. It also led me to buying off a few Japanese Discogs sellers and also had v good experiences with them.

Yeah I’ve ordered a lot, it’s been a nice way of kinda filling catalogue’s of artists who you maybe don’t see on the used shelf here as much or stuff like Beatles solo that I don’t necessarily need a shiny fancy new press of. The fed ex shipping they use is scary fast and they tend to declare 100 yen per record so customs has been low (but that’s probably not an issue in oz because I know the threshold is much higher). The cheapest per record shopping is to build up a basket over time and do a crazy order of 15-20 but if that’s not something that’s on the cards then Jamie is right that 3 or 4 is probably a sweetish spot. The grading tends to be pretty conservative and I’m yet to have a problem but they are graded on sight so if you’re spending over €15 on something I’d only get EX. For cheaper ones I’ve been happy with VG+. Finally they are often pretty dirty when they arrive so need a pretty thorough clean or two on the RCM.

Thanks Joe! Think I’m going to try 3 out and see how I go.

I will mirror what @joemac said about Japanese shipping, it's insanely fast. I have been ordering the Jazz Kissa Magazine series direct from Japan and each one has arrived in less than a week. I've ordered records from Japan at the same time as ordering records from the UK and the Japanese have arrived quicker.

The Curtis Fuller Sextette – Imagination (Savoy/Realm, 1963 First UK Mono Pressing)
Lester Young - Pres (Columbia, 1957 First UK Mono Pressing)

Carboot season is back and I lucked out on these two today for £3 total. The sleeves have seen better days but incredibly the records themselves are in stunning shape, just super dusty!

L'J IV - An Elizabethan Songbook (CBS, 1969 First Pressing)
The Stan Tracey Quartet - With Love From Jazz (Columbia, 1968 First Stereo Pressing)

A couple of fantastic British jazz albums. The L'JIV (London Jazz 4) is quite a rarity and certainly a unique release. The group took traditional Elizabethan songs and reworked them into contemporary jazz performances. It sounds like it wouldn't work, but it really does and doesnt have any of the dated sounds. "With Love From Jazz" is a Stan Tracey album that I have been after for a long while so I'm so glad I got a copy.

Really looking forward to the TP, its an album that I have been really excited for!
