So I bought like…a box of records at the Market Days sale so I am now on a vinyl diet and a single fresh grabs post would be unwieldy. Plus a lot of this stuff is kinda odd? So I want to write my thoughts too and we get a slow reveal and it’s mostly whatever I’m in the mood to spin so there is no logic to value, order, or whatever. Most of this is NM or VG+ on disc, covers will vary.
I posted a few of these elsewhere but this is so much fun I’ll re write
My first spin had to be
Julie Ruin - Julie Ruin. This was one of Kathleen Hanna’s many side projects when Bikini Kill was off. I think the rights on this are iffy. KRS claims they don’t have them and it’s one of her few albums not available anywhere. CDs are running at dumb prices so when I saw this below Discogs lowest CD price I had to. It’s gotta be one of her quietest projects and it’s got a bunch of hairlines but damn, even I got 1% cooler owning this one.
To the other side of the equation is one of the most common thrifting records,
Linda Ronstadt - Greatest Hits Volume 2. It feels like given the names of the songs are on the cover it should be obvious but this is pretty much a covers album. To hear Linda work her way throug( Zevon, Jagger, and Berry is a treat.
I put this one in the bin diving thread but the wildest thing I dug out of the $1 bin was
Skip King’s Endless Journey. A private press psych-roots effort by a singer who disappeared off the earth. This is on YouTube and I think the recording quality was just iffy but it’s really worth a listen if you have an inclination. You don’t really see the gumption to do a Proud Mary cover like he did.
Speaking of wild,
La Clave. Not as mysterious as the above but a one time effort off Verve with some big names involved. It cooks pretty darn well, a jazzy Latin funky effort that really grooves, This is a very, very clean promo copy to boot. Not saying to drop 100 on it but worth giving an ear to, Ebay seems to pop up with decent prices from time to time
Carlene Carter - Musical Shapes. Some cool shizzle about this. This version has an OBI strip. It’s country pop produced by Nick Lowe. And I swear you could insert some of these songs on country radio today and the only surprising thing would be that they let a woman on country radio. June Carter’s child with a blindside of tipsy me, it’s a strong country album and does not sound like a 42 year old record in most spots. As is Carter Cash law she covered Ring of Fire and it’s got a really interesting modern pace adjustment and style to it.
