This was probably one of my best months ever collecting and also the first time maybe since I started the dumb hobby where I actually had less records at the end of the month than at the beginning. I was really getting tight on space so I sold off about a hundred albums to my local record store. I did end up using some of that money to add some more rare/high value items that have been on my list for a while, namely the two Grateful Dead 2xLP 45 RPM MoFi releases and the original pressing of Sonic Youth’s Bad Moon Rising and Dinosour (Jr.)’s You’re Living All Over Me. That album in particular is kinda interesting in that it was released prior to the band adding “Jr.” to their name for legal reasons. So this first pressing they are just listed as “Dinosaur” with all subsequent pressings have the “Jr.” added. It’s also pressed on translucent brown (when you hold it up to the light) Quiex wax so it sounds really great too. This wasn’t the only SST title I added this month either, I also added recent reissues of Hüsker Dü’s Zen Arcade and Black Flag‘s Damaged. This month I was also easily able to pick up the 3 titles on my RSD want list, Jerry Garcia, The Royal Tenenbaums OST, and Pearl Jam’s Live On Two Legs. Along with these live albums I also picked up a couple of killer live box sets, Prince and The Rolling Stones, The Stones set in particular is excellent. I also received a couple of generous PIF’s from @DrainedPatience (Metallica) and @TransformerMan (BMRC). I also picked up the vinyl of one of my favorite albums of 2022 thus far in Horsegirl’s Versions Of Modern Performance.

I also purchased a bicycle with some of my record sales funds. I haven’t had a working bike for a few years now so I am looking for to trolling around Tacoma this summer.

A 1986 Shogun Prairie Breaker II

Maulawi - S/T (Strata, 2005 Soul Jazz Records Limited Pressing)
V.S.O.P. - The Quintet (CBS, 1977 First Promo Pressing)
The Beatles - Help! (Parlophone, 1976 Stereo Pressing)
Dr. Seuss - How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Random House, 1975 First Pressing)
Dr. Seuss - Horton Hears A Who! & Horton Hatches The Egg (Random House, 1975 First Pressing)
Milt Jackson Quintet - Soul & Co. (Esquire, 1954 First Pressing)

I got up early this morning and headed to the carboot sale. As it happens I might have got there too early as many of the stalls hadn't even been set up! What I did see was the Maulawi which I knew to be pretty damn rare. It turned out to be the reissue though but even that seems to go for £45 so the £2 I paid was a bargain! After a bit of time had passed I went through the stalls again and found 1 seller with an eclectic mix. I put the V.S.O.P (Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Tony Williams) and Beatles (still trying to "get" the hype) to one side, then found the Milt Jackson 7" (which features Horace Silver) and made a deal on them. As I was removing the outers (I always use my own so I like to leave them with the seller so they get reused) I was also looking at the great artwork for the Dr. Seuss albums and he said I could have them "on the house". Great score!

Howard Riley Trio - The Day Will Come (CBS, 1970 First Pressing)
Harry Beckett - Joy Unlimited (Cadillac, 1975 First Pressing)
Johnny Dyani Quartet - Angolian Cry (Steeplechase, 1985 First Pressing)
Mike Carr And His Trio - Live At Ronnie Scott's (Spotlite, 1980 First Signed Pressing)
Tommy Watt And His Orchestra - Watts's Cooking (Parlophone, 1959 First Pressing)

Some British jazz. The Harry Beckett was a great deal, as was the Johnny Dyani (which Beckett features on) which I'm really excited about. The Howard Riley was a fantastic price and it's pretty "out there" so I'm saving it for when I have the time to properly listen. The Mike Carr is another cheapo buy on the fantastic Spotlite label (the Don Rendell releases on the label are especially superb) with the added bonus of it being signed by Carr (the brother of Trumpeter Ian Carr). Finally a killer copy of Tommy Watt's "Watt's Cooking" which features the creme of British jazz.

Dexter Gordon Quartet - King Neptune (Steeplechase, 1979 First Pressing)
Dexter Gordon Quartet - Cheese Cake (Steeplechase, 1979 First Pressing)
Herbie Hancock - Sunlight (CBS, 1978 First Pressing)
Al Haig, Peter King, Art Themen, Kenny Baldock*, Allan Ganley - Bebop Live (Spotlite, 1983 First Pressing)

This was a fantastic little bundle from my local shop. I popped in there earlier today for a catch up and the owner pointed me to a big stack of new arrivals that were obtained from our local library's old collection. They are all in stunning shape, I was expecting them all to have been marked up but it really doesnt look like they were played that often. The Herbie only shows 2 dates that it was taken out. I just love the stickers and bits on them. There was another copy of King Neptune without them for the same price but I went for this because the stickers add that bit of local intrigue. When I got home I took the record out and stuck at the back was a piece of paper "with compliments" from the Director of Leisure at Westminster. Pretty random.

June 4th and this months vinyl diet has been blown.

Plugged a couple of 90s indie rock holes in my collection
Redd Kross - Third Eye (ORG RSD reissue)
Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists (Boom🔥Boom edition, Drastic Plastic)

Can never have too much Freddie
Freddie Hubbard - Breaking Point (Tone Poet reissue)

Hit my local used shop on my lunch on Friday. Don't tell @Mather I don't want to ruin his surprise gift I am bringing him when we have beers on Monday.
Steely Dan - Aja (CDN OG)
Sade - Promise (CDN OG)

Is the Aja on colored vinyl? My two Canadian copies are one yellow and the other red. Not the quietest of pressings.

Grabbed the big Nirvana box which got me to finally cave on a vinyl copy of Bleach which I got that and the Sam Cooke for about $12-13 each in the Target B2G1 sale.. I still got 2 albums left from that sale to come, super slow shipping especially since I now have 3 more coming from the recent clearance.

Then found the Love's A Real Thing Comp at a random thrift shop for $1 and it looks genuinely awesome, excited to give it a spin.

Not a big cassette guy but Amazon Warehouse had the finale PUTS album for $2 so couldn't say no to that. Then a random Murs 7" I got as filler for another order.

Got these 4 on ebay which started out as just buying an OG Contamination which is probably Goblin's most underrated score and then Won Shaun Of The Dead for only like $12 extra and the other 2 were like $4 each so... why not?.. I asked the seller to put the inner sleeves outside of the jackets as seam splits have been rough lately.. Wellllll, I open the package and he did that but he also went the extra step and pulled the actual vinyl outside of the inner sleeves as well 👀 .. Luckily he used a great mailer and didn't allow much extra space so they look good but that's the first and hopefully last time I see that haha.

Market Days Pt. 3

OK, let's break out some more $1 gems and some heavier hitters

Poison - Look What The Cat Dragged In

I said there would be more Poison - here is the other half. I don't think this one is as strong as Open Up..., less in terms of commercial impact and I think the deeper tracks aren't quite as strong. With that said, for a band that really came late into the glam metal / hair metal game, they brought some good hooks into this debut if nothing else. Also, that album cover...jeez guys, that's a lot of time in the makeup chair. Commitment there.

Saturday Night Fever OST

Honestly had been looking for this one longer than I care to admit at the hyper cheap price point. I kind of assumed that this one, with his omnipresent the sound track was and the general pricing of major motion picture soundtracks from this era, that it'd be an easy find in the $1-$3 range in person. Just didn't happen until now. It kind of functions as a Bee Gees GH Plus Album which in itself is probably worth the few bucks if you don't hate disco. Plus, it has Jive Talkin'. Which is the song that backs one of my favorite American Idol moments of all time when Josh Gracin was forced to sing disco twice in a season, and pretty much came for all of us in the camera lens. Guaranteed hilarity.

Billy Idol – Don't Stop

I'm a sucker for mid-sized formats given how predominant 7" and full length 12" records are, a legit 12" EP with two all-timer singles on it for a buck has some great utility.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Jazz Impressions Of New York

I mentioned previously I am taking this opportunity to try out a variety of jazz on wax to see what hits my fancy. They had some Brubeck, I know folks like some Brubeck, so let's try my Brubeck. I think this was...close, to my tastes. It might need a couple more listens to see if it's actually in my lane or just adjacent to it. Definitely a repress but not a current one, certainly not my least favorite pickup.

The Latin Dimension - It's A Turned On World

This on the other hand is a big reason I collect. It's a bit like the Skip King earlier, albeit more well known than old Skippy, but like. I can't find much on these gents overall, honestly, There is a "Best Of" on Spotify I am guessing based off of the 2010 with their (pretty sick) Eleanor Rigby rendition as well as a number of other compositions. It's classified as Bossa Nova on Discogs but I'm not sure I'd say that if you go to Getz/Gilberto for that reference, but I'd agree Latin Jazz for sure and maybe more salsa with some funk/soul edges? It's kind of boss, great spin that was hard to force off the table.

The Lunachicks - Luxury Problem

One of the more generous donors to this sale has some really cool punk and rock items. Among those I didn't end up grabbing out of wallet limitations and to not test my girlfriend's patience included some really heavy punk singles (don't worry nothing obscenely rare), some Team Dresch, and the $40 OG Rancid And Out Comes The Wolves. With that said, I paid $40 per for two. One was the Julie Ruin from earlier. The second was this one. It was admittedly an impulse grab. There may be some gender bias in here but I both have a pretty strong preference (even if this batch is not showing it) for female vocals as well as listening to music from female musicians in primarily male genres. This hit both of those itches. It's sharp as hell, maybe not quite my speed but it's hard not to appreciate what they brought to the table on their last album. Unrelated, the band put out a memoir of sorts last year called Fallopian Rhapsody which has to be one the best book titles in years. Adding that to the list.

funky beats for sure! You might also Like Grant Green's Alive album and some later Lou Donaldson.
Yeah, those great too! I have Grant Green’s Alive, Lou Donaldson’s Mr. Shing-A-Ling and Alligator Boogaloo. I also have Lonnie Smith Live At Club Mozambique and Funk Reaction. The Beastie Boys Book really got me exploring Soul Jazz and Jazz Fusion a few years back so I probably own more of these types of records than I should but the cut “Son Of Ice Bag” is one I come back to frequently. It really cooks!
