Fresh Grabs

I was actually really excited about these releases. These albums are underrated, people were so obsessed with Metallica changing their sound that they missed out on how great these albums were. I actually have a love/hate relationship with this band, they are really overplayed, especially here in Cleveland, and their obsessive fans are as annoying as poop.
I enjoy them but don't listen to them much, I still needed to have these albums in my collection and the colored vinyl is a bonus.

I remember when they released these.
Metallica cut their hair. They are shit now😄

Market Days Pt. 2

This batch is a little more normal than the last run.

I grabbed a couple duplicates at the $1 price point

Joni Mitchell - Ladies of the Canyon
ELO - Eldorado

For the ELO I wanted to test it against the MoFi and the original held up rather well. It’s not as good but given that I quite liked the MoFi release, I thought it’d be a blowout and it wasn’t. I'm unsure which I'll keep - it may be a situation where I get the MoFi out to a friend at cost as he is a huge fan of the album as I'm pretty happy with the original. For the Joni it was a condition upgrade, my copy had too much noise for my taste for Joni and this pickup fixes that.

Joe Pass - Virtuoso

I know there's been discussions here about people with their phones out Discogsing records. I'll do that - mostly because I don't know much about much in a lot of genres and also to know, on borderline cases, whether it's a deal where I can pick up the record later for a similar price if I have regrets over my decision.. No one was there at the the time (I'm not going to block off an area to Discogs stuff), but on this one it wasn't Discogs only but a timely N&G Search. I'll occasionally look for artists or releases that look cool and look to be good value but I'm not very familiar with - this post by @MikeH popped up and it felt right for a style/mood missing in my cubes. I wish the recording quality was better (a comment suggests his closest mics weren't working and they used a room mic) but the man is incredible on the guitar. A big promise in an album title that gets delivered on.

Poison - Open Up And Say ... Ahh!

It's always a bit surprising to me what records end up being everywhere and what ones don't. I don't think I've ever really seen a Poison record out in the wild. I know there have been some sparse repressings courtesy of Friday music on this one, but I would've bet a ton that Poison would be a band all over the cheapo bins. Guess I was wrong, which I'm a tad sad about because they're such a fun guilty pleasure. The recent represses seem...all over the place too (KPG in the deadwax is great, but it has the GZ/Rainbo roulette and a 45 RPM single disc press of a 36 minute record too), happy to get an early repress. This isn't the last of Poison.

PXL_20220627_130532232.MP.jpg

Paul Desmond - Glad To Be Unhappy

Posted about it in the Challenge Thread so I won't deep dive much here, nice low key jazz run here, I suspect there's a lot more here than my first listen gleaned.

Grover Washington Jr - A Secret Place

I have a bit of a rule of grabbing cheap Grover when I see it. Smooth jazz, funk, and soul elements with interesting layering and production decisions. It is usually a good time.

Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
Phil Collins - Hello, I Must Be Going

So what was the deal with Phil Collins deciding that his massive dome in red light was the right choice for this album cover? Cheesy Phil pop still has a home though, I’m just kind of surprised he was so successful as a solo artist

Blodwyn Pig - Ahead Rings Out

I don't have the foggiest idea where to start with this one. Well, other than the completely bonkers album cover. The music is mostly British blues rock but with enough jazz and production elements to differentiate it. They used the stereo elements to pan sound in an interesting way. Some real cool techs in there and it felt a few years ahead of its time

Open The Doors to Your Heart - J.O.B. Orquestra

A Jorge Barreiro project that I just wish had a bit more focus. All of the genre elements were there and it should’ve been a soul jazz funk fest and it didn’t get there for me sadly.

Jessie Hill - Naturally

Dirty messy soul oh man is this a treat. A lot of blues and Sourhern flair, I think this was his only proper album but like many artists in his realm he had singles everywhere. There was a lot of range put into this one and I’m a bit surprised it’s not more of a cult classic. It may be my favorite of this batch.

I have a simple rule: I see Joe Pass, I buy haha. All the Virtuoso albums are worth picking up if you see em for cheap.

BAND_응답하라~뿡야~LP.CD.레코드 매매 WORLD~^^♡_2022-06-29-15-54-15_01.jpgBAND_응답하라~뿡야~LP.CD.레코드 매매 WORLD~^^♡_2022-06-29-15-54-15_02.jpg

Just received a Discogs order today.

I thought I was buying a King pressing of the Nichols album, but instead the seller sent the 1972 US mono pressing that was imported and sold in Japan with its own obi. It is an error, but I am not going to complain.

The other two are from Toshiba-EMI's The Other Side of Blue Note 1500 Series (1984). I already have these albums on CD, but the price was right this time around.

Yes yes, I know I failed no-buy June miserably. But there is a no-buy July thread/challenge to begin at the turn of the month, so I will be committed. Especially now that I have gotten my fill from Musique Plastique after having been without them for 2+ years.
To be transparent, I only have two other single record orders made previously that should arrive in the coming days to make next month's post short.

June Acquisitions

PIF Claim + Birthday Gift

Art Pepper - Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
20220629_063608.jpg

Art Pepper claimed from @JohnnyCashFan.
Amy Winehouse was gifted to me as part of a late birthday gift. Not something I would've added to the library on my own accord, but I am pleased with how her music has aged over a decade later.

Musique Plastique (and related) pickups 😍

Nicolas Gaunin - Hulahula Kāne
Omni Gardens - Moss King
Patricia Wolf - See-Through
Narumi Yasuda (安田成美) - All Things Narumi (安田成美全曲集)
Yellow Swans - Going Places
V/A - Outro Tempo (Electronic and Contemporary Music From Brazil 1978-1992)
20220629_063914.jpg

Both the Nicolas Gaunin and Omni Gardens records are on the Moon Glyph label (based here in Portland, OR). The former is an avant-garde record focusing on sonic world-building with kalimbas, miniature gongs, flutes, and field recordings to create a very tropical environment. As for Moss King, I'm certain Mort Garson and Roedelius listeners would enjoy the soft, pillowy moog synthesizers presented here. This label is a joy, and the newest release from last Friday is also lovely.
Bought the newest Patricia Wolf LP after seeing her open yesterday for CS + Kreme. Although I did not purchase Patricia's newest record from MP directly, I did learn from them that they will be stocking both this and I'll Look for You in Others in the coming months, when an eventual repress is made available. Wonderful to see them do her a solid. With her newest record being on a Spanish label (Balmat), I predict Patricia's name will spread in the ambient/enviro/new age community rather quickly. So happy for her.
Harumi Yasuda's LP is a compilation of city pop/Japanese synthpop. The first track is actually the theme song to the Miyazaki classic Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, as I recognized it immediately when spinning it at home for my collection playthrough. Even better, when Tony (store owner) was giving this a whirl for the shop's background music, I saw that it was only $25 for an OG import and couldn't believe it! Had to snag it right then and there after he had finished spinning side 1. He is a hound for stocking the new arrivals/imports with excellent finds week in and week out. It even has a sticker sheet and poster that the original came with in pristine shape!
I couldn't believe that there was a sealed copy of the harsh noise/power electronics/drone LP Going Places by Yellow Swans, either!! It is hilariously out of print and was right there for $25.
Some more Music From Memory greatness, too. Great compilation of Brazilian music that sounds so ahead of its time. With the label being from Amsterdam, I'm glad that Tony can price MFM releases/reissues reasonably.
I'm so overjoyed that they are back!! 😍🥰🤗

Current Year pickups

The Bogie Band (feat. Joe Russo) - The Prophets in the City
Zola Jesus - Arkhon
20220629_093657.jpg

The Prophets in the City is highly likely among my top50 come time for this year's megalist, thanks again to @avecigrec for highlighting it. Infectious energy all around. DeepDiscount had deadstock marked down to under $10 shipped last month, so that was an easy decision.
Took a leap on the newest Zola Jesus LP during the final Bandcamp Friday, having never listened to Nika's music prior. Beautiful, yet brooding, art pop effort. A top50 contender for my list as well.

Miscellaneous pickups

BRUIT ≤ - The Machine is Burning and Now Everyone Knows it Could Happen Again
Sigur Rós - ( )
20220629_093717.jpg

It seemingly took ages, but one of the best post-rock efforts of the past decade finally arrived two days ago. The musical and emotional progression on display here fully encapsulates how powerfully post-rock can be executed and the heights it can achieve.
Another post-rock selection as well, and a classic at that. My favorite Sigur Rós LP, I like it quite more than Ágætis byrjun, actually. Outside of Musique Plastique breaking my no-buy June will, this album is actually the only one I've purchased this month. It is my lone purchase made during the Target sale from two weeks ago.

A few orders showed up this last week

Silver Jews - The Natural Bridge
Jim O'Rourke - Eureka
Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance
Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins
Portishead - Roseland NYC Live
XTC - Oranges & Lemons
XTC - Nonsuch
Colin Meloy - Colin Meloy Sings Together
