Fresh Grabs

Is Toast part of the Archive Series? Mastered by CB, I assume. Should be getting my copy this weekend.

It’s the new one yeah. It has the Special release series volume 9 logo on the back. My record store are cool, I spend a lot there and pre order most of them so they just give me a shout to collect once they have it rather than just making me wait until tomorrow.

Some real gems today...

Getatchew Mekurya and His Saxophone
Essential Ethiopian jazz. Not much else to say about this one.

The River's Invitation: American Soul Music 1960 - 1973
The eighth release in this incredible series put out by Cairo Records / Mississippi Records. They had just put it on the floor when I walked into the shop earlier today. Eric told me I was literally the first one in the world to purchase it. Can't say that has ever happened before!

Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru - S/T
Hauntingly beautiful solo piano from an Ethiopian nun.

The Louis Cottrell Trio - Bourbon Street
One of my all-time favorite New Orleans jazz albums from the understated clarinetist Louis Cottrell and his trio. A discogs purchase from Salvage Sound.

One of those perfect storm days!

Despite having parcel lockers in our building for whatever reason I got a notice card yesterday and had to swing by the post office on the way home. While not attending RSD last month I grabbed a few things from the Get Hip sale...

20220707_223012.jpg

Sun Ra & His Arkestra – To Those Of Earth... And Other Worlds
Sun Ra & His Intergalactic Arkestra – Outer Space Employment Agency
Various – Beat Jazz: Pictures From The Gone World
The Cosmic Rays with Sun Ra & Arkestra – Dreaming / Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie

When I got home from the post office, there were two packages waiting in the parcel locker.

First up was a package from @Hemotep which included a PIF, a pair of purchases from @virtualcratedigger and a very pleasant surprise...

20220707_223036.jpg

Joseph – Trio Sessions: Vol 2
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Nonagon Infinity
The RZA – Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai (Music From The Motion Picture)
Frankie and the Witch Fingers – Heavy Roller

The other package is the order I placed from a shop in Vancouver first thing in the morning on the 1st, impulsive and forgetting it was officially (No Buy-)July. The order was predicated on the fact that they got the Jamal Moss record and topped up with a few other things I'd been eying up to bring me past the free shipping threshold...

20220707_222953.jpg

Orchestre Volta-Jazz – Air Volta
Ndikho Xaba & The Natives – Ndikho Xaba and The Natives
Jamal Moss – Thanks 4 The Tracks U Lost
Sun Ra – Disco 3000
Sun Ra & His Solar Arkestra – The Magic City

A short while later I went to catch up with a friend who had mentioned he had a pair of records for my wife and me from an epic bargain bin haul he had a few weeks back. He'd also picked up an RSD release for me and had a birthday gift for my wife...

20220707_222933.jpg

Hasaan Ibn Ali – Retrospect In Retirement Of Delay: The Solo Recordings
Portishead – Dummy
Amy Winehouse – Frank
?? – ??

And finally, the biggest surprise of the bunch. We have a little hole-in-the-wall record shop here in town that's a bit out of the way and I've not been to since very early pandemic days but the owner also runs a reissue label that focuses quite strongly on Canadian punk. The latest in his "Mega Long EP" series of 33 ⅓ RPM 7" releases is from my above friend's dad's punk band, circa 1981! I'm very much looking forward to checking it out tomorrow when the wife and baby aren't sleeping...

As much as these look great, so much for no-buy July...

Nice, didn't know there was another American Soul comp out. Will need to pick that up soon.

Snagged these two yesterday. That’s a 57’ reissue of the Modern Jazz Quartet and an original pressing of Right Now!
