Fresh Grabs

How can you not love Plaid Room? These were boxed up like a tank ready for any pissed off Postal Workers it encounters along the way!

Strange Daisy surprised the hell out of me with a bunch of freebies on top of the 50% off sale.. I only bought 1 lp, 1 tape and 1 7" but got more freebies then what I paid for. Out of the freebies I only know about the Laura Fisher but it's a good one!

Lastly, two ebay purchases.. Made In Britain (Compilation) test press along with Irish Heartbeat which are both fun listens.

Then a PIAPTK Lot which I got for around $10 and truthfully just wanted the Golden Boots Night Of The Living Fest lathe but there's probably some other decent stuff in the lot.

speaking of great packaging and fresh grabs -- here's my latest ebay buy, Van Morrisson's "Hard Nose The Highway", packed to maintain freshness:

Why yes, yes it is wrapped in about 4 or 5 meters of saran wrap.

OKAY big post that includes basically everything I want to mention, including some stuff from even before the last one.

Stereolab - Dots and Loops - I've had this on my "to listen to" list for millennia, probably got added from someone on the forum glowing about it, and I've been playing it and especially "Brakhage" non-stop for like two months now. LP sounds great and I really appreciated the liner notes. Yes, it's the 3-LP. Walked into the record store intending to order a copy and sure enough they just had one in-stock.
Wilco - A Ghost is Born - One of the most productive things I've found you can do on the internet is to just follow up when people talk about things a certain way. When @livinsmall posted a status about this album I listened to it on a whim, and have listened to it a million-billion times since, my dad and I are obsessed with it. Especially the run from "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" to "Handshake Drugs." And the LP is probably one of the best-sounding in my collection, it's insanely dynamic.
SWANS - The Beggar - Was part of fundraiser for this album, if anyone wants to DM me I can point out my name in the credits but for now I'd like not to doxx myself. I've not really been in a SWANS mood lately but I listened to "Paradise is Mine" a ton when it came out, and the album is nice. LP's cut a little too hot and I really hope they do a separate press for "The Beggar Lovers."
SHPONGLE - Tales of the Inexpressible - We went into our local last September for a show they were hosting and my brother and I both separately looked at this and got curious. It's... EDM with world-music influence, made by people who associate with people who say "namaste" if that makes sense. Gimmicky as it sounds but it's a really, really good album if you can push past it and it's very much happy-place music in it's trippy way. Straight up might be one of my favorite albums of all time now, srsly go listen to "Dorset Perception" or "Around the World in a Tea Daze."
SHPONGLE - Nothing Lasts... But Nothing is Lost - More Shpongle is good Shpongle. None of their other albums are quite as consistent as Tales but this one's close.
De La Soul - is Dead - Need I say more? Probably, but I've not listened to this as much as I should have but I'm sure I'll get there some day.

_MG_2252 (2).jpg

Florence + the Machine - Dance Fever - Sorta embarrassing, but like Stereolab, Wilco, and Shpongle I came to it on a whim: I listened to "Daffodil" off the back of someone referencing it in a piece of UNDERTALE fan art that I had that "you get it" feeling with and it took a couple of listens but it's a strong album I keep coming back to, strong vocals, strong lyrics, vernal vibes.
Jack White - Entering Heaven Alive - Not sure there's a lot to say about this, I listened to it a lot this spring. Just a pleasant album. I also have Fear of the Dawn, and that's the one I've played more, just didn't get a picture. If you were put off by the more off-the-walls electronic stuff on FotD and Boarding House it'd be worth trying this one, it's much nearer Blunderbuss and more acoustic/throwback if anything. But also broader?
Joe Hisaishi - Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro - Kinda nothing here to say either, how could you go wrong? Bought slightly out of FOMO, only to get a brain massage putting them on. I expect these will get played enough to justify the import prices, and sound great. I'm so, so glad the Spirited Away soundtrack has "Always With Me" on it.

_MG_2250 (2).jpg

Tally Hall - Good & Evil - Like, The Album I listened to most in high school, and Tally Hall keep seeing resurgences with memes every two years or so. F I N A L L Y got reissued earlier this year and it sounds great. Amusingly enough there's a couple mastering errors on this but I'm more than happy with it and glad it's available.
Wilco - Summerteeth - One of the people who works at the local recommended this when I bought A Ghost is Born, as its his favorite. Also is good, sounds great, and apparently I paid a good price for it?
Steve Lacy - Gemini Rights - A friend recommended this earlier this year and frankly I overplayed it fast but the first half of the album is incredibly strong, and "Sunshine" basically makes up for the apparent front-loading. LP sounds great too.
King Gizzard - Fishing for Fishies - No real reason I finally picked it up after... Cripes, it's already been 4 years??? Sounds surprisngly good and has held up as far as I'm concerned.

_MG_2253.JPG

Little Simz - Grey Area - Couldn't not get it after how much I loved Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.
Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine - Perhaps the other Album I Listened to Most in High School. Obligatory, and the pressing... Is acceptable. Not bad, just wish it wasn't cut quite so hot and it's not like hearing the album anew. Pretty, though.
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life - Disappointed in myself that I didn't listen to this earlier. Funnily enough both my parents were working in a music store when this came out so they start singing along when I put it on... You can feel it all over. This copy is unfortunately not a keeper, no single - which is inexcusable since "All Day Sucker" is one of my favorite tracks on this thing - and it has a scratch through "Knocks Me Off My Feet." And amusingly "Sir Duke" is audibly worn out. Does have the booklet though and otherwise sounds great.
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book - Also not a keeper, side two off-center, but it'll do for now. All Stevie is good Stevie.
_MG_2254.JPG

Death Grips - The Money Store - So glad they reissued this thing on the black-white split. Even better than I remembered. I think it sounds great, but I can see why some would be disappointed.
Anderson .Paak - Malibu - Bought at the same time as the Steve Lacy as per the recommendation of the owner of our local. I probably should've listened to this at the time. Just noticed it's sideways in the pic. -_- They talked about it taking two years for the preorder to come in.
QUEEN - The Game and News of the World - Two I've been meaning to add for a while, neither I would call my favorite Queen album but I like them both well enough, and my Dad's particularly fond of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Both of these are actually from the owner of a local orchid greenhouse trying to de-junk his house, barely played. Kinda nostalgic just for that reason, it's a place I've been going to for over a decade now.

I like a lotta that

yeeeeeessssss. Look for an opportunity to spread the brain rot whenever I get the chance.

"Around the World in a Tea Daze" was probably my most played track of any artist or genre back in my DJ days - not only is it an absolutely killer cut, but it was like a get out of jail free card that could get me from pretty much anywhere to anywhere else, sonically!

Oh baby we got a new Wilco fan? Enjoy, those are two of the greats!

"Around the World in a Tea Daze" was probably my most played track of any artist or genre back in my DJ days - not only is it an absolutely killer cut, but it was like a get out of jail free card that could get me from pretty much anywhere to anywhere else, sonically!

Oh, I can totally see that. Are there any recordings from that period? I'd love to hear it in action.

There may well be, but not that I have. Pretty sure at least a couple of the parties were recorded though. The only mix I know I could track down that I intentionally recorded was a deep downtempo mix I did as a winter Solstice gift for friends about about 17 years back... but there's no Shpongle on that one!

...and it would take a decent bit of digging to find it - I have a box of old hard drives in storage I'd have to dig through.

I had to include flash in these with the light bulb dimming in my room.

Thank you to @Jan for both Bonetones and Yo La Tengo, @kvetcha for the Celeste OST, and @Matt M for the L80s compilation. I haven't spun any of these other than Yo La Tengo so far, but I will get to them I promise!

Two more of the latest MFM additions. I got both from the usual spot MP before they moved away from their mall location.
I saw Mary Sutton (Saloli) perform this new record in Portland two Saturdays ago along with Patricia Wolf on a very cheap ticket. I enjoyed the performance enough that I decided to purchase the new record on a whim.

Miscellaneous selections

Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
Kate Bush - Lionheart
Julie Byrne - The Greater Wings
Mariah - うたかたの日々
Nelly - Country Grammar
System of a Down - Toxicity

As I mentioned earlier, MP moved to another spot in Portland where they are partnering with two other record stores and a bookshop to provide a wealth of media and a wider variety of genres in records + tapes. My friend and I went to their soft opening on Saturday and saw a bevy of items that interested me, but these Kate Bush OGs caught my eye, especially as she pointed them out to me while I was flipping through other stacks. In particular, the alternate artwork Canadian press of The Kick Inside in relatively acceptable shape for $16! A French issue of Lionheart for $12 as well. So excited make frequent visits to the new spot. I still like the Japanese alt artwork that @Russ I has for this record the most.
My friend and I later in the day went, begrudgingly, to Music Millennium. I still don't like it. However, I did find Julie Byrne's newest indie exclusive for $25, and made that my first music purchase there in at least a year. However, QC on this record is not up to par, especially as it is a gentle, soothing album of guitar + ethereal atmosphere. Light woosh throughout all of side A, and a few loud pops on side B. I don't want to deal with Music Millenium's return policy + a trip specifically to get a replacement, so I will email the label today with photos + receipt and see if that gets me anywhere.
Bought the 2xLP Mariah synthpop repress, a very eclectic and experimental synthpop record from Japan. Recommended.
Nelly arrived on the 1st of the month as part of the SoundOfVinyl exploits. Most of my other orders were refunded.
Randomly bought the SoaD reissue from Target, though it took longer than expected to arrive.
