Fresh Grabs

This arrived today - sitting out in the sun - almost 100 degrees out. The postal worker doesn't want to walk 3 more steps and put my records on a table in the shade for some reason.

Anyway - I don't have time to listen to it but it looks ok - GZ pressing.

Nick Cave / The Dirty Three hidden tracks are on side D after a locked groove - so you have to lift the needle and move it a smidge and put it back down.

I picked up some Acen 12" reissues from the boxset. I've really meant to grab these for a long time now so i'm happy Knifeforce reissued them individually too. I wish they used different sleeves though - i used a sticky note so i can tell which is which.
I originally meant to grab only Pt1-3 but the 2092 remixes are pretty great so I got that one too.

Also got this Squid album - which I was going to pick up eventually but thanks to @throwingthings who PIF'd it!

Jorge Ben - A Tábua De Esmeralda (Philips, 1974 First Pressing)
Kazumi Watanabe And The Gentle Thoughts - Mermaid Boulevard (Alfa, 1980 Japanese Pressing)
Wax Poetics - Volume 2 Issues 1, 3 & 5

I spent the last few days in sunny (for the most part) Devon at the We Out Here festival. Got to see some absolutely fantastic live acts, ate a ton, drank even more, and generally had a blast. Whilst there I checked out the Near Mint record fair, picking up a few t-shirts and tote bags, and also the stack below. The 3 issues of Wax Poetics were on offer over the festival so I picked those up. The real finds were the 2 records though. I managed to get in early and secured the Jorge Ben before anyone else did, it was a decent price and in stunning shape. The cover of the Kazumi Watanabe And The Gentle Thoughts really grabbed my attention and it was only £10 so I risked it and was well worth it, it sounds fantastic!

Gene Russell - New Direction (Black Jazz, 1971 First Pressing)

This is one hell of an upgrade, sounds absolutely stellar! Weirdly though it's incredibly thin, I don't usually care about the whole weight thing (does it really matter??) but this really is light. Might have to weigh it if I can be bothered.

Nice! Wax Poetics is probably my all-time favorite music magazine. And that poster is beautiful!

did some digging while on a work trip in denver/boulder. sticking to the $5-$10 zone though the steve tibbets and elizabeth cotten were both a little more than that (though still not bad!)

actually scored a couple longtime wants! elizabeth cotten is obviously the GOAT of country blues, thrilled to finally have an affordable (but not digitally mastered) copy. the suni mcgrath has eluded me for some time, he's one of my favorite "american primitive" guitar players and this is the last of his 3 lp's i've been able to source (for only $5!). the mompou piano stuff is very special — a modest and mystical composer who gets more play in my house than anyone except satie and debussy. i used to have a copy of the everly brothers but a friend made off it with it when he moved to LA, and i've always been a bit sore about it. a real sleeper great for fans of the hollies, they wrote and played almost everything here. i've been slowly collecting the further discography since about 10th grade, but have never come across this peel sessions single before. if you ask me, they are THE great lost slacker rock band, but don't take my word for it.

going out on a limb with basically everything else here. the steve tibbetts is something i'd never have picked up if the shop didn't have a listening station. i'm not sure why the spirit moved me to pick this up and give it a listen, but i was floored—expansive solo guitar pieces, spaced out synthesizer sketches, basically everything i live for in one place! i'd never heard of late-80s dream pop duo hex, but when i saw that steve kilbey of the church plays all the instruments, i figured it'd be up my alley. i cannot believe how prolific that guy was between 85-90 or so (and most of it is actually good!). with backing from west coast progressives buddy colette and laurindo almeida, i was expecting some cool vocal jazz from the kitty white lp, but newbown is almost like third-stream chamber jazz. musically just as striking as that cover!

oh yeah, and because i'm in colorado, you know i had to pick up some weed 😉
