Fresh Grabs

A record fair was on last night a short walk away from my house. Initially wasn’t bothered about it, but there was some pretty good stuff.

A cheap version of Closer, Solid Air by John Martyn, a recommendation from one of the sellers - Volume, a pre-FU Manchu stoner band, the first QoTSA album, and OM’s Advatic Songs.

$20 Tone Poet from Amazon. Might still be 50% off.

Anyways, Donald Byrd paired with Pepper Adams is always a treat. Love those long baritone solos.

Increible sounding live set from RVG. What a legend.

Agreed! It's amazing to think of how dedicated these guys were to chronicling the jazz of their times. And how successful! That's a great photo to have included with this live set. (But I have to admit that the liner notes are a bit confusing because they list and discuss all tracks from Vols. 1 and 2 in a manner that made it easy for me to believe they all were on this record, when in fact this is just Vol. 1. As I was reading them while listening to the album, I was really surprised when Side 1 ended after just two tracks. Maybe I wasn't paying careful enough attention....but the front of the jacket doesn't indicate Vol 1.)

Pick-ups from the last few days:

1) Trans-Canada Highwaymen "Explosive Hits Vol. 1" - new release obtained direct from the band. This is a "supergroup" of canadian musicians (Moe Berg of Pursuit of Happiness, Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies, Chris Murphy of Sloan and Chris Northey of Odds) playing canadian classics from 68-75 and released in the style of an old K-tel compilation. It's a ton of fun.
2-3) Bar Italia "The Twits" and "Tracey Denim" - was in Montreal this weekend so I took the opportunity to hit some of my favorite spots. One stop was at Atom Heart records. Was nice talking to Francis again - it had been a good 20 years I think. Really nice to see he's still at it. The shop is fantastically curated as always. This was my wife's favorite record store back in the day because they have this sweet lounge chair she could sit in while I browsed. My daughter got to experience the chair this time. Came out with the two Bar Italia albums released in 2023, the new one from this week and the other released a few months ago.
3) Robert Charlebois & Louise Forestier (1968 original pressing) - found this Quebecois psych rock album at Aux 33 Tours. This record is pretty much regarded as the seminal album from the province, the one that sparked a change in the french canadian music scene, a self-affirmation of sorts because it was the first that embraced our own way of speaking, our own accent. "Lindberg" is the big hit but the whole record is solid. The condition is wonderful for the age - sleeve is pretty much MN and record VG+ with noise in the quiet parts. $20 well spent.
4) Serge Gainsbourg "L'Homme A tete de Choux" - new 2023 remaster picked-up at Aux 33 Tours.

And an official numbered screen print I picked-up at the show on Friday night:

Nice haul with what sounds like some memorable experiences connected to it. That first one sounds like a fun listen.

I bummed couldn't get to Atom Heart when I was last in Montreal

It's a fun little spot - it hasn't changed one bit since I started going there around 2000 (I guess that's true for the other places in the St-Denis area - Beatnick's and Aux 33 Tours, notably). There's a Manga lounge up the street we usually have to stop at for my daughter. And also a Korean corner store a little further up - we love their home-made Kimbaps. Makes for a nice but solid trek with lots of nice stops when you start at Atom Heart and go to Aux 33 Tours.
