Hip Hop

Yea I get that given enough time everything will be reissued and I'm mostly fine with that, but this is waaaaay too quick of a turnaround and it seems to be happening more and more lately (Medallo I'm looking at you)
I don’t even think I’d care that much if it was a regular repress as I love the OG cover and the blob vinyl is dope. But this repress actually gives buyers more content than original buyers got and is $25 cheaper (found my DRW invoice and that shit was $65 after conversion). That’s garbage.

Didnt he produce two of the best hip hop albums just last year? Doesnt sound like a rut to me

Unmatched as a producer, perhaps too generous. Assuming you mean Daytona and KSG, both great albums.

His personal music has been suffering IMO, especially if you count the singles like that one with Lil Pump. Of course some folks are going to try to convince me that's genius too lol. To me it felt like there was nothing he had to say on ye that was that interesting and the beats sounded an awful lot like the TLOP style.

Edit: I should clarify the rut to me is one of innovation. The music is still quality, just doesn't feel as boundary pushing.

Yea that lil pump song is trash and Ye is probably his worst album (but still good) and yea hes not putting out albums like Dropout or MBDTF anymore but hes been making music for almost a quarter century and very few artists are still putting out their best work after that long of a career. I dont call that a rut, but just the natural progression of a great artist, nobody stays making A+ music for that long.

At the end of the day no matter what kanye does now he did give us some amazing albums before he went down this road.
We always have the privilege of going back and hitting play on those gems so nothing but respect from me for Mr West.

Yikes. Jesus to King is a cosmic misfire to me, and despite my low expectations I really wanted to like it. Not a wholly bad album but on first reaction this is by far my least favorite of Kanye's, and nonwhere near the goal that he was setting with this.

The lyrics are just far worse than I could have expected. As technical rapping, it's weaker still than the material on ye, simplistic, poorly delivered and poorly recorded. Despite its best intentions this feels less spiritual than KSG, or even something like Kendrick's Good Kid. I actually have no problems with a religious theme, being raised in a church, and harboring no ill-will despite having little to no conviction personally. This feels like a grabbag of Christian signifiers, having nothing of use to say about the experience and feeling of religion.

IMO the most important tool of Christian music is the metaphor, which of course is the preferred way of teaching laid out in the text of the Gospels. Here Kanye misses the memo and stays painfully literal, he keeps telling us that we need to believe in the man upstairs without telling us why. He's saved, but how? Of any album this should have been his most autobiographical but feels like his most distant. There's plenty of Kanye-isms that keep you entertained, but most of the laughs from me just came at the bad Jesus shout-outs. It's clear Kanye really wants to proselytize, but he ends up just creating an even more comical image of contemporary religion IMO.

Musically I think again this album redeems itself somewhat. Kanye just has a great ear for things that don't go together on paper like Kenny G and Clipse but work in his weird universe. I particularly liked the choir elements, but wish there had been a big moment like "ultralight beam" to show them off. As a result it feels pleasant but with no standout moments to me.

To me this feels less inspired than the dirge-y Protestant hymns of old that Kanye thinks need updating, and certainly not as good as solid gospel music of the past too. Will give another few shots for sure but this is currently feeling like a 6/10 at best.
