Hip Hop

I'm not judging any folk. We all have different salaries and come from different walks of life, what you do with your money is your business but I personally cant believe those prices that drop for Mach Hommy its just outright extortion to me. Same with Griselda releases i would love to own Benny Conway & Gunn vinyl but I wouldnt be able to eat lol. Do ya"ll really justify it? I'm just interested to hear opinions it's not an attack on folk i promise. each to their own 👍🏻

Funnily enough, me and another mod of /r/hiphopvinyl were talking about this the other day. How I justify it? By selling other records that cost me 10-20 for a lot of money. So then it's not so much I sent crazy amounts as I spent 10-20 dollars on the record (in a roundabout way).

Ok that makes sense. I never sell anything I really should start actually

I used to not to ever (well, except for when I owned/ran a record store) but it got to a point where the only records I was really looking for were the spendier ones (we're talking pre-LiMiTeDeDiTiOnDaUpE!!!!) and the odds of me ever coming across them in the wild were next to nil.. so yeah, I could wait out years to see if I could luck out for a copy of Archie Whitewater or I could just drop $50 and get a copy right now. Of course, along the way.. I realized records I had were worth way more than some I was looking for but they were usually my only copy (and I wanted to keep).. so it came down to trading other valuable records for another copy of that record and selling/trading it.

Basically, find your niche and exploit it. I put a lot of indie Canadian rap up on Discogs and was rewarded for being the first person to put them up there. Find your niche and exploit it for the records you're looking for and you're good to go~

I don't listen to Mach at all, really... his prices are a huge turn off and I haven't heard anything from him that I care for much, but again that mostly has to do with how he markets and prices his music.

as far as Griselda and Alchemist, I cut back a lot on my vinyl spending elsewhere, so by buying these pieces and being more selective elsewhere I'm actually spending less on records than I was previously.

As for me, I am by no means wealthy but my wife and I are comfortable. I don’t have many expensive hobbies but vinyl is one of them. If any of my purchases were impacting my kids or our general financial situation, I wouldn’t do it. But my wife and I have our fun money and I’ll splurge on vinyl if I’m feeling it.

That's actually good food for thought. There is definitely some stuff I dont need or no longer want I need to move it on. Think the most I ever spent on one album was about $100 for the official Watch The Throne vinyl

Yeah instead of impulse buying or buying bulk amounts of stuff you only half want just put the cash towards something else you really really want. Makes sense

Mach Hommy said it like this :

"When someone comes that places ultimate value on the creation itself and everything else is secondary. I feel so bad and so low when I put a price on something."

Question: Any price?

Yes.

Question: Does it inherently feel like it’s diminishing or cheapening it?

"Yes. totally. It’s just something I deal with it. It’s two things: it’s the happiness and the repeat value. Happiness. Ask yourself what you would pay for one hour of happiness. Would you pay $300 for one hour of happiness? Now, if I told you that one hour of happiness, that one hour where you will be transported outside of yourself, what if I told you that was infinitely repeatable by you whensoever you chose to do it again with no limitation on it other than you having the time to listen to it. Do you think one hour of happiness whenever you want it is worth $300? It’s that simple. I think it’s worth way more than $300 but I created a number where I felt people could engage with it and it would let me know that at least this person is making an effort. I do not want it in the wrong hands."

I felt that.

EDIT: I've seen people pay over 200 to get their hair done, go to an amusement park, get a bottle at the club, etc.

I mean that is also a great story to tell when you're laundering money through digital album sales.

Damn that's definitely one credible way of looking at it. I guess how I value it I dont deserve it. Dope concept

I like Mach a lot but I think his reasoning here is bullshit. Why bother making records at all then if it bothers him so much to put a price tag on his albums. It's very clear he's doing it so a) people will talk about it and b) he can sell records for a ton of cash (obviously he has to make a buck though so i do respect that aspect). I think ironically making these $150+ records he's doing exactly what he's complaining about: "someone comes that places ultimate value on the creation itself and everything else is secondary". Like he can do whatever he wants with his vinyl pricing, I can live without buying a bunch of albums from a specific artist i like but I do dislike that this ludicrous pricing is becoming more prevalent. Sorry 4 Da Rant

I think you all are taking his story here way too seriously and taking what I said way too jokingly.. Like, it's crystal clear it was a means to launder money and also generate hype (hear about the rapper charging $1000 for his mp3s?) ... but the main reason is to launder money. It's music industry economics 101.

Also him and Fahim shouting out culture vultures coughdaupecough and then turning around and charging even more? irony.
