Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

I'm not saying your opinion is Bat shit, that was clearly a joke.
Nor am I saying that you HAVE to like PJ or your opinions are dead to me (I reserve that for other acts...)

But "Boring"?
Whipping? Habit? Spin The Black Circle? Lukin? Blood? The whole PJ as backing band for Neil Young on Mirror Ball?

If you were in college during the same time I was, maybe the ubiquity of Ten on this side of the pond renders them overexposed so I wont include those even though there are those that we could argue break the "boring" label (Porch, Black, Release, Garden, Ocean).
But, I think BORING is unfair.

That adjective should be saved for...say...Doves? 😝

Ten wasn’t that overexposed over here and is the one album of theirs that I bought and I still resent the £5 I spent on it in a January sale in 1999...

I also have no dog in the aic fight. I stopped caring after Jar of Flies. They put on a hell of a show and Layne was a great talent.
Me neither. I was always indifferent to AIC. I think Cantrell and Layne were super talented I just always felt they were a bit too dour and self-serious for my liking. Of all the groups from the Pacific Northwest to break big in the 90’s they were my least favorite. Which isn’t to say that I disliked them I just never actively sought their music out.

I still remember when I bought my first copy of Facelift on cd. I got it and Ritual de lo Habitual On the same trip to a local (long defunct) shop called Warp Music. My dad was a marine and he retired after my junior year of high school and we moved to Durham. There were a bunch of “cool” kids (read douches) that I desperately wanted to be friends with. But my math, band and Christianity kept them from giving two shits about me. The “leader” worked at the shop and was “impressed” with my purchases. I guess he was a little chummier after that. Man, high school was weird.

Also, would? Is probably the song I have listened to the most ever. Mostly because it and Drawing Flies by Soundgarden are basically my walk in music and got me so hyped I had to play them twice EVERY time I heard them. Would? Being on the Singles soundtrack meant more opportunity. No wonder my college roommates hated me. Lol.

Jar of Flies was the end of the road. I mean if I want to listen to Cinderella, I’m gonna listen to Long Cold Winter not some Seattle band...

All criticism for all media/art needs to be taken in context. Even The Rolling Stones of the world said Chance’s album was bloated and disappointing. That’s pretty damning.

And even in the paragraph directly below that, the first review cut quote sounds mixed and then there are two more paragraphs describing mixed reviews from critics and then their one public opinion is old melon head probably the most visible critic in the world giving it a zero.
Right but what I'm getting at is that most established publications have been very hesitant and careful to not give anyone too negative of a review, or a review that even remotely negative in the case of bigger names. It's a problem so I usually wait until I listen to the album before I read/watch a review. Melon is just a guy by himself, he doesn't give a shit what artists think of him because he doesn't have magazines or festivals or content that he needs them for ( like Pitchforks Over/Under) I think that's why he's so popular, he'll shit all over a bad album without a second thought

Fair, but that’s also why I said context is important. We know what pitchfork and Rolling Stone’s agendas are so you know that a middling mixed review is their version of shitting on it.

@Lee Newman also here's the list the Wikipedia page has.View attachment 16199
I can’t believe Chance The Rapper’s The Big Day got positive reviews. Music critics are too generous with their ratings. I can’t believe the A.V. Club gave that album a perfect score!

Music opinions are all subjective in the end. But I feel like most music critics are too scared to judge harshly. Fricking every studio album nowadays has a positive metacritic.....

In general, I only ever really care about positive reviews. Everyone’s taste is different, and while there are a few writers out there whose tastes align with mine pretty closely, the only time a review ever influences my listening decision is “Wow, this new [X] album is getting really positive reviews, let me check it out”, never “Man, this new [X] album is getting trashed, it must be garbage/I won’t listen to it”.

On that same note, the phenomenon in internet culture of getting really excited over a negative review is... really weird. Like, I HATED Chance’s new album, sure, but it was really weird seeing how excited everyone got over Anthony Fantano giving it a 0 or a 1 or whatever. The whole weirdness of his cult of personality aside, in general it seems like people really revel in an album they hate getting a really negative review, even moreso than when an album they like gets a really positive review. It’s one thing to be like “I dislike this album, and this review articulates my thoughts better than I was able to”, but there’s just something icky about the massive amount of sheer joy people get when Fantano gives an album a 0, or when Pitchfork gives a 1.6, or whatever

Long Cold Winter Rules!

I think in the case of Fantano a 0 is about as frequent as he gives 10s.

Where are the bad reviews. Back in the day a bad review had weight. Now people are getting away with AWFUL albums because critics are scared shitless of pissing off an artist or label
