Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

I think the Billie thing is even tougher because her existing style is so distinctly hers that even good copycats are kind of pointless and are only to grasp elements of it. Like, the Nirvana comparison - no one was going to be Nirvana but I can absolutely see how someone can take elements of Nirvana's music and weave it into other influences to produce something cool. Even with Lorde, who I think is our epicenter here, an artist can take elements of Lorde and spin off into legitimate, good, different music (Billie did it to some extent, I think Olivia Rodrigo did it, I think there's elements of Lorde in Halsey's works, etc.). I struggle to think how a copycat is going to take something from a song like Bad Guy which is so unique or Happier Than Ever which could fit in well in an album from 60 years ago without issue...until about 2:30.

Not to say it's not worth trying but artists should probably give Billie the look they give to like an Adele - no one's gonna out-Adele, Adele, or out-Billie Billie.

Signed records, posters, even for sports with match worn shirts are kind of pointless unless you plan on displaying them in some capacity.

I'm a little bit of a hypocrite because I have a couple of signed promo posters on my walls but I'd have otherwise not hung them if they weren't signed. I even went so far to frame a signed EL VY poster because Matt Berninger is one of my all time favorite lyricists so it was important. If it was not signed there's no chance that ever stays outside of the record sleeve.

Speaking as someone who loved the prequels as a kid, I have always felt that the discourse around Star Wars wouldn't be nearly as toxic as it is if people weren't so insecure about a piece of media they like being perceived as being "for kids." For whatever reason, people have this idea that the franchises they loved as children are supposed to no longer be for children once they're older. Probably because a lot of people don't like the idea that a movie isn't made to appeal to them specifically. It's the kind of mentality that made The Rise of Skywalker the mess of cowardly backpedaling and empty fanservice that it was and it's why that movie basically turned me off from the series altogether. Not just because it was lame, but because it felt like the filmmakers throwing their hands in the air and saying "whatever" and for me, when it gets to that point, it's probably just time to stop watching.

Say what you will about the prequels - and they are far from perfect - but Lucas knew what story he wanted to tell and didn't compromise his vision to tell it. They were the OG trilogy for a new generation and despite the fact that people forgive the original films' faults because of their nostalgia, it's inconceivable to them when someone who grew up with the prequels holds the same attitude towards those movies.

the original films were all ages fun. They were released before I was born and I enjoyed them growing up as a child but they were not made explicitly for children. They were some of the first four quadrant blockbusters. The prequels had a lot of baggage. I understand why the younger generation enjoyed them but are not comparable for a lot of reasons. 18-35 year olds loved Star Wars as much as kids did at the time of its release. That was not the case for the prequels.

They are all ages full family films though and I do feel sometimes that a certain type of Star Wars fan won’t accept that of new things and gets quite toxic in complaining that they aren’t adult or gritty or edgy enough whereas my feeling so that I should always be able to take a child to a Star Wars film (or show them a Star Wars tv show) and them have that same sense of wonder what I had watching the originals as a child.

I don’t think that was ever the issue with the prequels, it was conversely shonky cgi and hours of politics and trade disputes that turned me off, they just weren’t entertaining enough…

I completely agree. The weird toxicity that surrounds lots of Sci-fi and superhero pop culture is annoying and sad. But people hating the Star Wars prequels aren’t solely hating on it because “it raped their childhood memories” or whatever hyperbole that are espousing. The movies were not very good, they are a slog. Kids liked it at the time because kids don’t have discerning taste. Those kids have grown up and now because of their nostalgic memories they wanna equate the quality of the first trilogy to that of the prequel.

I'll show my true nerdy colors. I loved Star Trek growing up and thought Star Wars was just ok. The prequels we're the first I got to see in the theater, and despite there being elements that were cheesey, I enjoyed watching them in theaters. The new ones on the other hand I did not enjoy watching. I thought they were a hot mess. With the exception of Rogue One which was an adult Star Wars and the best of the new ones in my opinion. My step son was 11 when that came out and he did not like it, despite loving Star Wars. He didn't really like any of the new ones a whole lot except the Hans Solo one and that one ball shaped droid. I'm just of the opinion that JJ Abrams is not good. But I don't really care about him messing up Star Wars, I'm pissed at him for messing up Star Trek.

My hot take. I always kinda didn’t like Star Trek but actually quite enjoyed the new ones in the cinema because they were just kinda brain off action films…

This is kinda also my take on stranger things. It’s a hot mess of utter nonsense but it’s fed people of my age and up about 10 years a pale facsimile of the stuff they enjoyed as kids in the 80s and they’ve lapped up that nostalgia…

I am kinda with you. I really like TNG as a kid but also found the movies to be quite enjoyable but the Star Trek Movies are quite a bit different.

I enjoy nostalgia for what what it is which is mostly just cheap empty sugar high. Stranger Things is fun but it does use nostalgic references as a crutch sometimes.

I liked them for that reason too. I didn't like them as Star Trek movies though cause they were always about trying to find the better way to solve problems and not just jump to pewpew fights. So your take makes tons of sense and pewpew fights are fun to watch without needing to think. I love lots of brain off entertainment. Those were just a case of needing an original IP instead, but movie producers are so risk averse they wouldn't fund a new IP like that.

Stranger things was real good. Great balance between nostalgia and horror, but everything after season 2 just feels like a cash grab and trying not to get the kids to grow up lol.

Kinda the same thing with Rick and Morty, first 2 seasons were great, but everything after that is just kind of... Eh. Although this last season got back a little bit of mojo, I'm not sure they will be able to maintain it.
