Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

Most.

This take dates back to my high school jazz snob days. Most rock records are just 12 songs of the snare on 2 and 4 and with not high hats/cymbals, bass on 1/3.
for sure, a basic rock rhythm is unable to compare with so many global musical styles. but there's a lot of rock music that dares throw in complex, non-quantized, exciting rhythms... but surely I'm not breaking any news by saying this

Hot takes not subtle takes!

I actually prefer the Stones over the Beatles for this very reason.

I mean “Can you hear me knocking”
I can get down with that. The Beatles was full of great song writers and Ringo was the best drummer for them because he could cut through the racket of their shows to keep them together. But I think that sort of side steps the question…

Keith Moon
Ginger Baker
John Bonham
Neal Peart

Are these guys interesting or boring? Who else makes the interesting list?

Ok I may be reactionary on this but this opinion dates back to adolescence. So who could fault me.

Keith Moon- he was a banger
Ginger Baker- know we are getting somewhere but still sounded like a banger
John Bonham- progression but still a banger
Peart- now prof rock is another territory.

After I think about this list rock drumming is more about power that rhythmic variation.

If I was only given one album to play for the rest of my life I'd probably go with Beatles, but if I was given one band I'd go Stones. Career longevity aside, I find myself reaching for Stones stuff before Beatles. Maybe Scorcese is to blame because I can always transport myself to a different place easier than if I were vibing to Norwegian Wood or some shit.

And none of these guys got shit on the limb independence of Tony Allen.

Contrarily I found that The Smile being basically Radiohead with a jazz drummer meant that on certain ocassions the drummer was just annoying me.

Really I hear more of an rock with orchestral use of percussion. The drums are so buried and unimportant I do t see how they could be objectionable. There is probably a bit more swing over all (dotted 8th notes or shuffle) to the rhythm in most songs though. Which is unusual since rock typically is straight 8ths or two evenly divided notes per beat.

Swing= Do you like worms
Straight= Barnyard

It’s not objectionable, I quite like the album, it’s kinda mid tier Radiohead which is right in my zone, but it distracts me at points when I don’t want it to.

For shits and giggles, who in rock is interesting? I mean I have my list, but from someone with some technical knowledge, I might learn something.
I have a friend who’s a drummer, well.. more of an acquaintance than friend really but he is classically trained drummer (went to Berkeley School for Music) and his favorite drummer of all time is Sting’s solo drummer; like not Stewart Copeland from the Police but the dude that drummed on Ten Sommoner’s Tales and Brand New Day. Just for context, I am 40 and this guy is about a decade younger than me. He would list off his rational for why and also list off all the stuff that the guy had been involved with (and he was very accomplished) but at that point I realized that we come from very different place when it comes to our appreciation of music. Which is fine, but I realized I would definitely need to take his opinions on such matters with a grain of salt.
