Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

You’re why Pitchfork did a Sunday review of Adam Sandler

It’s goofy, but that’s what they are about. They are kind of goofy. I don’t think I could write goofy lyrics. Wait didn’t you just mention Frank Zappa 🤨 as a great album that’s over an hour. Author of the album Sheik Yerbouti?

Its that time of year for the "Best Album of 2023 list".

I drop this take as member of the N&G metal community, THE resident Wilco Stan, and devotee of all things that skew RAWK 'n Roll:

Any year end list that does not include Tears For Fears The Tipping Point is worthless and a waste of your time.

The only reason Renaissance is on any best of lists is ….. sorry can’t really think of one.

In fact, the audacity of naming your “dance/disco” offering Renaissance is beyond self- aggrandizing and boarders on insulting to those artists who’ve been putting out excellent releases is the genre. Like until Beyoncé came along the rest of the genre was in the dark ages.

I’m assuming then that Renaissance is Beyoncé’s latest Album - And its worse than the others ???

Yes as to the first question.
I am not the person to give you a definitive ranking of the Beyonce' oeuvre - but I'd think that 4 or S?T probably tops most fans' lists.

What i will say is that it should not be on any "Best of 2022" lists that aren't going beyond 15 or 20 albums deep
Any list that has it as #1 is wholly unreliable.

I have never disagreed with something on this forum more than I disagree with you rn.

I can’t think of any other album this year that is more worth my of the #1 spot and it’s not even close. From the perfect production, it’s masterful use of samples and it’s story of being a love letter to all things black, queer and dance. I’m not going to pretend it’s perfect album and you are more than entitled to not like it. But this just seems like a unnecessarily contrarian take on it

I have not listened to the new Beyonce album. I don't like pop music that much tbf. However, I've seen some thoughts around the internet and over at r/indieheads about Beyonce being #1 on A LOT of lists. The thing is, the high praise for albums from Alvvays, Big Thief, Soul Glo, Jockstrap, etc. might help those bands gain even more exposure, those I mentioned are not really struggling, but it could help them sell more records and become moderately successful. On the otherhand, does Beyonce care that she's the #1 album on Pitchfork, NPR, etc.? I doubt it. She may not even know half these publications. She's the biggest pop star on the planet outside of maybe Taylor Swift. She doesn't need the extra exposure. Picking a very, very, very, very, very famous pop star as your #1 album of the year regardless of whether it's good or not is boring. Buck the mold and be bold. Give praise to someone who's equally as deserving. Music is sooo subjective and there's soooo many lists out there that it doesn't really matter. And heck, a publication that gives a "controversial" #1 pick would maybe get more clicks instead of me glancing over and seeing "oh another #1 for Beyonce..."
