I Don't Know Them: The June 2024 Vinyl Challenge Thread

Day 17: Forever
this song made #9 on Billboard’s airplay chart, but didn’t chart on the Hot 100 thanks to Billboard’s idiotic rules on radio-only hits then. play a record or artist you first heard through the radio

This is not easy. I probably discovered way more music via after-school video shows / Much Music back in the 80's and 90's than I did with radio. I still do listen to radio these days though - I wake up with French CBC every day, it's mostly talk radio but they do play a song or two here and there. I'd say I heard Charlotte Cardin on there first. Now back in the day. I do remember that I wasn't into Led Zeppelin when I was young, other than having heard Stairway To Heaven - couldn't say where I heard that first. A school dance maybe? But I do remember that I heard Rock And Roll off the radio in the car and thinking "what's this?". I'm 12-13 and we're probably in the mid-80's by then. That was my gateway into the band.

Day 17: Forever
Play a record or artist you first heard through the radio

Growing up in LA in the 70's I was blessed with not one, but two powerhouse radio stations, KMET and KLOS. Both had great DJ's (Jim Ladd worked at both over the years) and played the deep long cuts that you wouldn't hear on other stations. Driving around in the Pinto Wagon listening to Led Zeppelin is a core childhood radio memory.

OMG, this is what I was going to play!

Back to the drawing board....

Pink Floyd "The Wall" (1979 Sony japan)
Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 was my first exposure to Pink Floyd, right around when it came out. It was everywhere. The "teacher leave them kids alone" line was pretty memorable for a 10 year old me.

Day 18: Honey
the first song/video to present a sexier image of Mariah as she would soon be free from the constraints she faced under her label boss/ex-husband Tommy Mottola. play a record that accompanied an image change.

Given the first few albums, I never would have guessed that the Arctic Monkeys would have morphed into a tight lounge act. But I dig it.

Arctic Monkeys ~ Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino

Day 18: Honey

IMG_8670.jpeg

This song was Mariah's 3rd (& last) #1 debut on the Hot 100, and further emphasized hip-hop influences in her music, whereas before what little hip-hop elements Mariah had in her music was restricted to single remixes. The music video also exhibited a more sexual image for Mariah, in contrast to her more conservative image in her earlier years, which she briefly talked about in an interview with Rosie O'Donnell in 2000.

Anyway, here's my pick for today...

Sam Smith - Gloria

IMG_8669.jpeg

Sam Smith also adopted a much more provocative image for this album which... hasn't panned out well for them, thanks to a mix of fatphobia, homophobia & accusations of "dEvIl WoRsHiPpInG" (guarantee you, has a straight cisgender man & woman made "Unholy", it wouldn't be nearly as controversial as it is). That's a damn shame, as this is up there with The Thrill of It All as one of Sam Smith's best albums.

The Cult get haircuts, don t-shirts and opt for a more alternative 90s sound.

It kinda flopped.

The record is actually pretty good...

The Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin" (1999 Warner Brothers; 2019 reissue)

Day 14: Fantasy
her first foray into hip-hop sounds, collaborating with P. Rison & the 🐐 ODB on the superior remix. Play a hip-hop or hip-hop inspired record

Madvillain - Madvillainy

Day 16: Always Be My Baby
a song that's often been acclaimed as one of her best but doesn't really do anything for me. on the flip side, play a record you love that not many other people seem to like (from your pov)

Joe Diffie - Regular Joe
IMG_5253.jpeg

Even in our accepting music nerd bubble, there isn’t too much love for Mainstream 90s Country.

Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Way It Is
IMG_5252.jpeg

Figuring out a song that I first heard on the radio is tough. It would have to be something my parents, family and/or my friends didn’t enjoy. It would also need to be an album that wasn’t a big MTV but would be played A LOT on late 80s early 90s Top 40/Adult Contemporary radio. After considering all these factors, Bruce Hornsby feels like a safe bet.

Day 15: One Sweet Day
a smash ballad dedicated to Mariah’s former collaborator David Cole, Boyz II Men’s road manager Khalil & the victims of the AIDS epidemic. play a record dedicated to a loved one (whether by the artist or by yourself)

I send this one out to my lovely wife. She's got some appointments and biopsies and tests and whatnot coming up, all to hopefully get that wonderful one word diagnosis of 'benign.' Until then, all we can do is wait and support each other. But she's nervous, and I hate seeing her beautiful mind in this state.

The Beach Boys - Sunflower
IMG_5251.jpeg

Their first album of the 1970s. Just look at that cover. These were no longer Beach Boys.

No, these were Beach Men.

One of the few things I learned from watching The Disney+ Doc, at one point in the 70s they had actuall Considered changing the groups name to simply “The Beach” as part of a rebranding effort. They obviously decided to go another way.

Day 19: My All
a song inspired by her affair with Derek Jeter, specifically a rendezvous they had in Puerto Rico. play something romantic.

Hans Zimmer - True Romance Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
IMG_5248.jpeg
I Had To Come All The Way From The Highway And Byways Of Tallahassee, Florida To Motor City, Detroit To Find My True Love.

Day 19: My All

IMG_8674.jpeg

Yes, there were two single releases. One for the standard song paired with “Breakdown” and one for the “Stay Awhile” remix. I miss that era of remixes from artists like Mariah Carey & Redacted Kelly, where they would essentially record a whole new song & pass it off as a ‘remix’.

Anyway, here’s my pick for today…

Luther - This Close to You

IMG_8671.jpeg

One of the most romantic voices in all of music.
