Immerse Your Soul In Love - The Radiohead Thread

Looking at some pressings - is it even worth trying to find a good copy of Kid Amnesia? Or should I try and track down the individual 2xLP releases from a few years back?

I’d tread carefully, pick a vendor with a good returns policy and not overpay. There is distortion all over the high end of How To Disappear Completely that appears to be mastering and so is baked in. The EU press I have seems to be pressed really well but there are all sorts of reports of the US press being an absolute horror show.

If this OG I just bought is actually legit and looks like the description…might be able to help one of you out with one for a hell of a price 👍🏻
Have you found one of promo Ok Computer cassettes that they glued into the cassette deck? Wanna say there was 1000 of them.

Alright, as someone who has listened to maybe three or four Radiohead songs in my life, any suggestions on where I should start album wise?

Been on a 90s kick recently and Radiohead is the one band I've always wanted to get into but never really gave 'em the chance. Decided I'm going to go through their discography, wondering if I should just start from the beginning or elsewhere.

Or maybe I should start by reading Steven Hyden's This Isn't Happening? ;)

Any advice is appreciated!

gen x? start at the beginning and work yr way forwards sequentially

gen y? start with "in rainbows" and work in concentric circles outwards, cherry-picking as you go

the 01 and 10 is worth reading about, or just listening to.

Lots of good advice. I would skip Pablo Honey. Listen to In Rainbows, The Bends, OK Computer and Kid A in no particular order, although I would go Ok Computer and Kid A back to back once you get there.

Radiohead's one of those bands where there is such a distinct progression to their sound. Personally I'd listen to each album from The Bends to In Rainbows in order. Like I guess Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief can be omitted for brevity but they're still worthy of a listen.

This would be my suggestion too. It will give a better appreciation of the left turn of Kid A and Amnesiac.

Pablo Honey almost feels like a different band altogether. I too would skip it and maybe circle back once you decide that you like them and want to get some history. There are some good tracks on it but as an album, I'd say its kinda boring.

I wouldn't skip Amnesiac though.. its probably like my 2nd favorite Radiohead album.

Amnesiac isn't for everyone, I have always enjoyed the album but my wife does not one bit (she prefers OK Computer and In Rainbows). Pablo Honey I can definitely say hold off until the end, agree with you on that.

I'd say its kind of subjective. If you look at universally loved albums by Radiohead - its OK Computer, Kid A, & In Rainbows. Those are the ones that everyone likes and will show up in everyone's top half of their favorites in their discography. Everything else is up in the air imo.
I do agree that Amnesiac is pretty underrated though. I feel like a lot of people take it as a Kid A b-side album whereas its a very different album and I, personally, like the songs better on this album.
At least listen to "Blow Out" if you're going to skip Pablo Honey.
I was just listening to that after reading this thread. Agree its a standout track on that album.

Pablo Honey is their weakest, but I'd say it's still important to listen to for context. As much as people dog on it, a lot of the elements that would go on to make Radiohead great are already there, they just aren't fully realized. I feel like the new Smile single is concrete proof that the Pablo Honey versions of Thom and Jonny never left completely.

I love Pablo Honey...there are some great songs and some b-sides are amazing

Your wife and I would get along great. I keep trying with Amnesiac and it just does nothing for me.
