It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

A friend says watch for Macedonia to upset someone, perhaps the next Iceland ?

They did just beat Germany in WC qualifying! My wife works on a development project in North Macedonia, and they were understandably ecstatic.

Thanks @wokeupnew for the graphic. It would have been much better for my schedule if UEFA could've put France v. Germany on a Saturday or a Sunday.
Yup! Germany are a weird one. Sometimes good sometimes maybe shit.

The scheduling sucks. But I guess it’s the benefit to still working from home (if you are doing that) since all the games are in the middle of the day

For those in the U.S. ESPN2 has a Euro Preview Show at 6:30 pm ET tonight.

I’ve been back in the office but torn about our opening game on Monday…do I WFH and have the game on in the background, knowing it’ll distract me and having a meeting at 3…or just have the afternoon off.

It will be tough for you IMO, but it's been a strange year so who knows. I always pull for the Tartan Army when I can. Long time Colin Hendry admirer.

I’d put my money on the French but Turkey in the final and Germany in the semis isn’t happening in my opinion.
I agree. I'd be happy if germany makes it to the knock-out games , but especially from the quarterfinals on this should be interesting. I think France has the best team , but you got Italy, England, Belgium, Portugal that are really strong, add teams like Germany, Netherlands,Spain , Croatia, turkey etc. that have enough talent to beat any team in a knock-out came if the game moves the right way plus some surprise team that may show up lucky. I'm really looking forward to this

Yeah, the thing that elevates France, for me, is the depth, as well as the stars there is quality back up in pretty much every position. That said in knock out football anything can happen.

Portugal to retain are my dark horses, they were a poor team relying on solid foundations and Ronaldo 4 years ago, this time out there is so much quality throughout their side. Fernandes, Neves and Bernardo Silva isn’t a bad midfield trio and there are others in that position too. Be interesting to see if Joao Felix will come of age in this tournament too.

England will go far but their defence will fail them when it gets to the real sharp end. Belgium have had a lot of their team go over the hill but they have 2 or 3 top talents that can decide top games. Italy are interesting but I’m not sure if that’s just because they are Italy.

It’s honestly a crapshoot trying to gauge how anyone will do outside of France. I could see all the “top” teams fare well or do horribly and not make it out of the groups. It’ll probably be easier to make a bracket after the group stage is done.

I like Turkey I think they’ll do really well and surprise a lot of people. I could see England being England and get beat by them but manage to be a tougher Portugal team.

Honestly that’s not been my experience, bar Iceland in 2016, of England in major tournaments. It’s usually grind through games they should be winning comfortably and get knocked out on penalties at the first real test…

Portugal have a really good team, Bruno, Jota, Cancelo, Dias, Ronnie. They could easy go all the way again.
