It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Also this is getting funnier by the rejection, I couldn’t write this type of comedy gold. No one wants to manage Spurs…

I don't know if I'd want to do it, even with zero coaching experience. Yeah it's got good pay but the stress it must bring.... no way.

I dunno. Is the stress that high? It’s got be lower than at the bigger clubs?
There's more pressure to do a lot with less resources. Like, the club basically wants another Poch era miracle; spending 0 dollars and making CL or better but it's not going to happen.

Oh it absolutely isn’t and let’s be honest regardless of spend the only time thst spurs have had a run of European Cup qualifications was under Pochettino. In the grand scheme of things being 5th or 6th, running the 4th close and maybe getting it some years, and a deep cup run is pretty much success for PL era Spurs outside of Pochettino. Hell before Redknapp top half and entertaining was success.

Not allowing Poch to keep freshening his squad with yearly tweaks circa 17-19 was utter stupidity.

You're bang on. And the board/Levy has put things in place with the new Stadium and everything else to be a perennial CL club.... except for the football on the field.

Poch had a quote about Furniture that always made a lot of sense

“When you talk about Tottenham, everyone says you have an amazing house but you need to put in the furniture. If you want to have a lovely house maybe you need better furniture. And it depends on your budget if you are going to spend money. We need to be respectful with teams like Manchester City or Liverpool who spend a lot of money. We are brave, we are clever, we are creative.

“Now it’s about creating another chapter and to have the clear idea of how we are going to build that new project. We need to rebuild. It’s going to be painful.”

But even with that. It was only a painful rebuild because you didn’t buy a player for 18 months before Jan 19. Teams that continue success through rebuilds and avoid transition don’t suddenly one summer turf out 4 or 5 and replace them they add one or two every year tweaking and often will replace the player before they go so that the replacement is fully up to speed once they’re actually needed. That is on Levy, Poch has to want to buy then.

You can win occasionally on a smaller budget and upset the odds but it’s the exception to sustain it. United weren’t going to eternally spend that high and blow it and with the quality of Pep and Klopp City and Liverpool are always going to be consistently there or there shouts. Capitalising when Chelsea have a Chelsea bad year, being better than Leicester and trying to finally win a cup have to be Spurs’ immediate goals.

The stadium is a difficult one but a bit like Everton now you really needed a bigger stadium but as you can see with Arsenal it can have a bitter financial aftertaste. That said at least you have a better stadium. I can’t imagine anyone at Arsenal is happier at the soulless Emirates than they were at the beautiful Highbury.

I think we're both making the same points. The point being that if Spurs want to be a bigger club then they need to start spending and cycling through the squad to get rid of deadwood.

The Poch quote hints at the infrastructure being top class but then the squad being stagnant and stale. Not much has changed with the majority of the squad since like 2015.

Yeah for sure. I just don’t know if that stadium is going to constrict you for a few years like it did Arsenal. Also it’s kind of gone past that now and tweaks will no longer do. That was for 17-19. You’re going to need for your starting team at least 2 centre halves another holding midfielder, another attacking midfielder and 1 or 2, especially if Kane goes, strikers. That’s a lot of money and year of settling them all in!

yeah it's a disaster and that's why I think managers are turning down the offer. That article you linked said it was a "dizzying" offer as well for Lopetegui. These managers won't want to do it even if it's a few million more than they're making right now.

Lopetegui was a poor approach to be honest. He finally seems to be settling down again after the Spain/Madrid mess of a few years back. I can’t see him risking a similar mistake again so soon and Sevilla have a really exciting looking team. Plus they have a gobby chairman so it was always going to be leaked by him if it failed.

Was just about to post exactly this. They are going out today
I’m wearing my green away kit from the 2018 WC today and was worried I’d be jinxing them. It’s such a nice kit and they saved it until the very last day of that WC. I bet they thought they could wear it more often if they made it out of the groups. Same thing with this blackout kit. Saving it for the last day and then lose wearing it again.

What a match between Portugal and France. Portugal had twenty crazy minutes after penalty. I hope they won't regret not scoring another goal. Go Portugal!

Best player so far: Renato Sanches. What a beast.

I’ve been really impressed with the interplay between Semedo and Silva. Portugal have been really strong down that side.
