It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

3rd place rule is so dumb when a team who loses 2 out of 3 can still make it.

Is that worse than a team drawing all 3 and going through as often happens? I think I prefer the team that’s won one?

It’s an arkward solution to the problem of allowing tournaments to be inclusive enough to include countries that will struggle to qualify for a World Cup now that Europe’s allocation is only 12 or 13. On the balance I prefer the likes of Wales, Ireland, the north and Scotland being at the last couple of tournaments but also wonder if it could be structured better.

Fair point. And Denmark when through as the 2nd place team by winning 1, losing 2. I guess that’s okay in that situation but when 3 out of 4 still advance then maybe scrap the group altogether. Really should be only the top 2 from each group IMO. Structure could be better.

In a 24 team tournament though it doesn’t work with top 2 and then knock outs. Doesn’t go down to 4 for semis. World Cup in the 80s used to do a second group stage but it produced even more dead rubbers. 32 would make a mockery of the tournament and qualification because almost half of UEFA would be qualifying and it’d only be the whipping boys missing out.

There is something to be said for going back to a 16 team tournament football wise, Euro 2008 is by a distance the highest quality international football tournament I’ve watched, but then equally is it all solely about that and do only the bigger countries have a right to be in tournaments.

Lol I didn’t even think of the math

Gotta say the winner of England v Germany has a great draw to run to the final. Don’t rate any of the other teams. I know the Dutch have won all 3 but they really don’t impress me. Wales could even have a chance of another fun run to the semis.
