It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

This makes no sense to me. It's already difficult enough to watch MLS now they are burying it even further. How do they expect to grow the game by hiding it behind a paywall that most people have no intention of using.

You’d almost think it’s better to give it away to a free service to get eyes on it and using that fact to push for higher sponsorship prices for shirts etc. You really need a critical mass of viewership to make the paywall work.

It’s so dumb because no one has Apple TV. This is not a reason, at least for me, to get it. ESPN+ is currently bundled in with Hulu and Disney+ for me for like $17/month which is a steal. I’ll watch the occasional MLS game on ESPN/plus. I don’t need another streaming service. It’s getting ridiculous with how many there are you may as well just pay for cable again.

Until pricing information is released, I think the big selling point is the no blackouts. That’s a big deal. I have many friends who bitch and moan about MLB blackouts every year. I’m not sure how well ESPN & Fox have done to “grow” the game since they’ve had it, but when it comes to the NFL and NBA, everything else is always going to be inferior. Apple is going to have to be competitive, so I’m curious to see what they can do.

Games are and have been shown regularly on local channel via ABC, an ESPN(Disney) owned entity and that is as free as your going to get here in the States.

Fair enough. I know that certain sports here would deliberately avoid sky and go to bbc/itv/channel 4 because they’d get higher viewership and so eyes for their sponsors. It’s really a balancing act because smaller sports with less sponsorship the guaranteed money is best and large sports sell so many subs that the pay tv is always going to pay over the odds for them. It’s that kinda middling level.

Yup, don't like this one bit. I've casually followed MLS since its beginning, but now that I have local teams (Charlotte FC this year and St. Louis City SC next) I'm way more invested. But I'm pretty much over paying for sports streaming. I probably won't bother with ESPN+ this Fall to watch my alma mater and college football is my Holy Sweet Baby Jesus sport of sports.

MLS already had awful TV ratings and I don't think this will help.

Honestly, there are just too many f’ing sports in this country. For some reason, there’s this thinking that league(insert name here that’s not the NFL or NBA) can be just as big. I mean there’s a damn professional CORNHOLE LEAGUE. That’s just never going to happen. MLS and football in general have made great strides here. I guess letting in all those huge caravans of people are starting to pay off…..😉 j/k

With it being summer and there naturally being less sports on I’ll have to see if I can convert you to the joys of the two GAA sports. Completely amateur, you represent your own county, and absolutely insane. I always love it when someone new sees hurling, in particular, for the first time…
