It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Honestly, there are just too many f’ing sports in this country. For some reason, there’s this thinking that league(insert name here that’s not the NFL or NBA) can be just as big. I mean there’s a damn professional CORNHOLE LEAGUE. That’s just never going to happen. MLS and football in general have made great strides here. I guess letting in all those huge caravans of people are starting to pay off…..😉 j/k

I mean I’m the late 80’s early 90’s the only channels you could watch soccer on outside the World Cup was On Latin channels.

My dad was one of the first people to coach soccer at the high school he taught at.

With it being summer and there naturally being less sports on I’ll have to see if I can convert you to the joys of the two GAA sports. Completely amateur, you represent your own county, and absolutely insane. I always love it when someone new sees hurling, in particular, for the first time…

BRB…

My first introduction was indoor soccer. Specifically the Cleveland Force.
Then I lost interest. Circled back again in the 90’s with the mens national team. And after that, interest was lost. Finally last year I decided to give it one more chance and so far I’m all in.

I love this poster. Seeing all the English clubs in one view is pretty amazing.

I love this poster. The regionality of English football is so interesting to me.

It was largely a working class game has its initial growth spurt with the tail end of the industrial revolution. That’s largely why the north west, rather than London, is the heartland of the game and has provided three of the four most successful clubs.

The growth of London as a footballing force outside of arsenal really is a development of the last 20 to 30 years and the more effective harnessing of talented youngsters form the inner city.

Laugh all you like @boojy but it gave 10 year old Joe no end of joy to slide in and pick up pace as he went, take out the man and ball and just keep on sliding! Also there’s something about just getting caked in mud at that age that’s awesome!

Oh no I'm laughing because we used to live on a golf course and had a good 8 kids that were all me or my brothers age....we created this game we called tackle soccer which was just American football mixed with Rugby until the ball hit the ground, then it was a soccer game unless you get the ball back in the air to a teamate and they catch it. We used hockey nets for the goals because the whole throwing the ball in the goal part....anyway usually the golf course was wet when we played (the rain kept people of the course) and we would do damage lol good 10 yard slides into the other team take them out, never any fouls of course.

Way back when I was in college, a few of us happened upon Sunday Irish day at a stadium near our apartment, and it became our standard Sunday mid-day activity. Show up with a few six packs, a mini hibachi, and watch alternating games of hurling and Gaelic rules football while learning some choice profanity... great memories. And yeah, when that first hurling match started, we couldn't believe our eyes. Those guys are crazy.

The pitch in San Salvador for this CONCACAF Nations League game between the US and El Salvador is fuckin' criminal. I get that it's raining, but still, it looks like it's been used to graze livestock.

Yea but remember the days of slide tackles in the mud. I miss that. All we get is artificial turf out in CA. The smell of cut grass in the morning always bring me back to HS practice. Don’t miss the goose shit on the field though.

Summer is the wrong time to be playing soccer in that area of the world. It just rains constantly.

I bet Gareth is well pleased with this stupid nations league ...before it no pressure ..and quiet confidence...now he’s odds on to be out of a job by the end of the year

I mean if you’re going to be weird enough to fetishise right backs it’s going to catch up with you in the end.

The good old fashioned “leveller” pitch! Great stuff! There’s nothing like making a sliding tackle on a mud bath…

It ended up being a fun game to watch. Both teams getting a red card, a bumbling referee, a Maradona style handball on El Salvador that wasn't called, it was chippy. Glad no one got hurt and made it out with a tie.
