This is a stupid comparison but someone at my work was comparing Kylian Mbappe with Wayne Rooney (for some bizarre reason). I said that Rooney is clearly the better player, more accomplished career for a long, long time. Mbappe could become better if he continues down the path he's going. But as of right now it's Rooney. Am I wrong here?

An aside, I think this is because football fans LOVE to hype younger players like crazy. I mean there's whole very popular instagram pages devoted to young, up-and-coming football players. Football is so fleeting for players where you may only have a couple of very good years before injury or just decline from being at the top of the game. Players like Messi or Ronaldo or Rooney are the exception to the rule of most players having short careers. It makes my head spin when people are already calling Haaland the best PL striker ever or Mbappe the GOAT. Like.... calm down.

Maybe it was more about style than accomplishments. I haven’t watched enough Mbappe so I couldn’t make a judgement.

They’re such different styles of player too thst it’s such a really weird one to make a comparison about. I’ve said it before on here but Rooney is the best teenage footballer I’ve ever seen, he’s was freakishly complete at 18/19/20 but also probably peaked at 23/24. He did still have a solid career after that though. His list of honours is pretty impressive too.

He also had this thing that for all his talents and mostly top class performances when he was bad he was awful. He had this weird capacity to once or twice a year play as if he didn’t even know what football was.

As for Mbappe, he’s utterly thrilling and in terms of that devistating thrill that pace gives you Rooney never had it. Rooney was one of the quickest over 5-10 yards but not over half the length of the pitch. But you’re right, can’t compare them until their careers are over. Mbappe will probably have to either leave France or win another World Cup to elevate himself to the next level.

Haha! I mean I have a soft spot for Celtic because of my background but a fair chunk of fans are pretty much just as bad now too. The club has never refused to sign people based on their religion but the atmosphere of the opposite sectarian hatred in the stands there these days isn’t much fun either.
