It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Yea this is what I was saying before....he comes in hot in such tight areas, gets beat up more often than not, goes down and play continues...Partially on Jesus for being a bull in a china shop like I said but at the same time alot goes uncalled against him so for a penalty to finally be given and this be the result is funny

Yeah I was a soft penalty but there was contact and the game has changed to the point where pretty much that is all that matters. Equally on his side he can’t not go down, it’s for the referee to judge whether there has been enough, particularly when someone literally elbowed him in the face without sanction!

hasn't stopped reds from coming out for things like that in the past. If it's not a red then every accidental stamping needs to not be a red.

The problem is you can’t calculate intent in the same way as you can say an offside or whether a ball has crossed a line, It’s inherently subjective in nature. Especially given the speed the game is played and that these incidents happen at. You can’t have a game refereed by humans in which there isn’t a degree of this kind of inconsistency.

Agreed, I too hope this is the match that changes referees from being shit to being right and universally on the same page

You had the best referee in the country, by a mile, on Sunday. He at least seems to have some general concept of the judgment and game management. As hard as the game is to referee there is some dross out there, although they’re not helped by some pretty insane lawmaking. The handball and offside laws in particular are way too complicated. Although the VAR thicker lines has definitely aided offside this year.

Yea I know the post was sarcastic. My friends on Facebook are also trying to discredit our run so far saying similar things about calls been going our way lol. It was expected because everyone hates us but its getting to the point of laughable now....If by some grace of the football gods we beat City the world may just implode

Mate. You’re doing well. Backbiting is a thing that happens when you’re doing well, it’s a compliment. If you beat city to the title the vast majority of football fans that don’t follow spurs and city will be privately delighted whilst still slagging you, because that’s just what fans of other teams do.

Exactly. If you beat City for the title, most are going to sing your praises, me included. Now you get to feel the heat that's on when your team has a title run. It's fun while it lasts but unless you're a City fan, it can be fairly fleeting so try to just enjoy the run.

I get it! I guess I just expected more along the lines of Arsenal can fuck off they aren't supposed to be doing this good! As opposed to they've been lucky thus far and it'll catch up with them eventually lol btw this is not directed at you @wokeupnew i've been going back and forth with others on Facebook before I got talking about it here and am just letting those arguments carry over here

Yeah I mean they’re genuine questions. You’ve got a good side playing well but they’re untested and whether you’ve got the necessary constitution and depth to see it though is a fair question. Especially given how early in the year it is, arsenals medium term history and the relative callowness of your team. You are only tested by fire going for tittles and we will not know the true answers until May, if we can know them at all this season given your squad’s age and the stage of your development.

I don’t think you’ll win the title this year, City are way too talented and battle hardened, but unless you collapse embarrassingly it’s still good signs and you’re way ahead of where I thought you’d be in the summer.

Don’t be so tetchy and enjoy it.

Nah, Arsenal have been good there’s no denying that. I just think there’s a few instances where things could have gone the other way. They’ve played well.

One thing that's kind of lucky but probably just taking advantage of a mistake from the opposition that I think about sometimes watching Arsenal, was the game vs. Fulham. Fulham were leading beacuse of Mitrovic's goal. Arsenal get one back. Then, the best player on the pitch for Fulham, Tete, who did wonderfully to keep Martinelli quiet up until that point is subbed off for Mbabu who fared worse than a traffic cone. Martinelli drove past him about 3 or 4 times in the last minutes which led to the corner which they scored. It was just terrible game management from Marco Silva taking off a player who had done so well. Credit to Arsenal for taking advantage but it could have easily drawn before that late goal.

Lots of little things have been going right for Arsenal. Which, they'll need if they want to win the league. Like the "2-1 FC" Liverpool team that won the league two years ago.

You could equally flip something like that and say keeping Martinelli out of the game emptied Tete’s tank and the substitution was necessary. That’s what good teams and players do, keep asking questions all match long and wear you down. It’s not a coincidence that the best sides often win games against smaller teams when they aren’t playing well late on.

But @Jonathan Y do try to just enjoy your team being really good. My favourite season as an adult was 06/07 when we were going for the league after 3 down years with a new young team for the first time with all those questions. It was exhilarating. Also wasn’t so much social media so the chat was more with lads in the office/pub.

Oh I have been!! There is a local group called Gulf Coast Gooners that meets at a local pub called MacDinton's for each match...Unfortunately cuz my bday weekend I had friends and family in so I missed out but it has been a blast! The wife is even getting into it at this point and is consistently hitting the 'SALIBA' chant as well

Villa, Forest, United, Liverpool and Chelsea? Chelsea won when it wasn’t the “European Cup” but the others have, right?

Yeah I use the words European cup and Champions League interchangeably because it was the first when I started following the game but yes. I particularly hate the later now its the Champions “and a few spares” League so I don’t tend to use it.
