It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Strong disagree with that. At his peak he was at his best on the left in a 4-3-3 and now probably as the left of a spilt front two. But I’ve seen him play effectively on the right and left of a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, as a target man centre forward in a 4-5-1 and in all three forward positions in a 4-3-3 whilst at United. The reality of the situation at Madrid was that his numbers were so frightening that you put him where he wants to be. There has been a very similar situation with Messi at Barcelona.
If I’m being unfair it’s because of recency bias. He went from being the best goal scorer of all time to just a very good player moving from RM to Juve. He was only good in Allegri’s system and very good in Sarri’s. I still don’t think Juve are playing to his strengths. The entire RM squad was set up for him to excel. He’s just not as good as he once was, which just makes him very good instead of the best ever.

He’s also 34/35, not 24-33 like at Madrid, age catches us all. Messi isn’t scoring at that rate anymore either. 53 goals in 75 games is a remarkable scoring record, one most strikers at their peak right now would kill for. 450 goals in 438 games at Madrid was freakish!

OK, well now the USWNT April matches have been cancelled. As well as the WSL/MSL season being suspended.

I'm guessing the same applies to these dude teams I was about to start watching? Dammit. Poor timing.

It should have but here is the shameful thing.

UEFA are refusing to cancel European competition games games even if they are behind closed doors. They are also too busy to talk until Tuesday 😮

In England they are refusing to contemplate banning crowds, never mind cancelling games, until the govt tells them they have to.

Italy and Spain have closed their competitions down for the next while. France and Germany are carrying on without crowds.

It’s taken a manager and a player being diagnosed with covid and 2 squads in self isolation for the premier league to finally act! They’re meeting today and it’s likely the league will have a multi week suspension and measures as extreme as voiding the season are not off the table.

the Kraut league is on hold now too

It’s looking increasingly like euro 2020 is going to be pushed back to 2021 and they’re hoping that extra window of weeks in the summer will allow them to suspend play now and then go back and finish the European seasons then.

They won't void the season because teams like West Brom who miss out on promotion will take legal action. Never going to happen. I think they'll postpone for a bit and then play out some of the games behind closed doors.

The reports have it as being on the table right now. I don’t think it’ll happen either but it’s undoubtedly an option. I do think the euros are gone till 2021 to make a summer window and a 4-6 week suspension of play is inevitable. I do think it’s an option if there is no real possibility of imminent play in 4-6 weeks voiding the season is a very real possibility and that legal action for compensation for sensible action in the face of a global pandemic will be laughed out of court.

They've postponed till April.

No way the owners of Man United allow the season to be voided either. That would mean another season outside the CL and without CL revenue. Too much money at stake for it to be chalked off.

I didn’t think it’d happen today. If there’s still no play able on 3rd April it’ll definitely still be on the table. I do find it comical that you’re preaching the end of civilisation in one thread and that the football season can’t possibly be voided in another 🙄

Or maybe I just have a cynical view of the football authorities?

I’d test the head of anyone that didn’t but when you’ve got players and staff infected and full squads in isolation it’s difficult to play games. That and, even though they probably think they are, they aren’t above the rule of law or the passage of time.

At this point, Euro 2020 isn't happening. The Olympics aren't happening. There's no rush to void the season when you can delay till summer. You've also got 3 teams in the relegation zone with a bunch of matches still left to change their fate. Unless the EPL just said no one goes down this year, you have to eventually let those teams have their shot. You also have 3 teams in the Championship who would have their fortunes altered as they're not allowed promotion and the money it brings in. The problem is this is going to take a lot of time till people can give the all clear.

voiding doesn't mean we stop where we are. It means it didn't happen, it doesn't count, we start in august as if this year hadn't happened. I don't think it will happen and its extreme but if we hit may without the season having been restarted (our schools, colleges and childcare facilities are likely to be closed until after the Easter holidays so that's 21st April and Britain will eventually catch up) it will definitely be an option on the table. Football is absolutely insignificant in the face of a global pandemic.

Let's just void the season and have last years spots for CL places. But City's ban still stands. Congrats on the CL spot Arsenal!
