It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

You’re bitching about extra time after a game in which we witnessed one of the most exciting 30 minutes of extra time I can remember? There were 4 goals in half an hour!

Haha I didn’t know what was happening, but usually ot just just a bunch of people barley able to play.

To be honest I still prefer it to penos! They’re a horrible way to win as a fan, a horrible way to lose as a fan, are horrendous for the players and are only really loved by the neutral and, with no respect at all, fuck the neutral. Also even if you’re into the drama of watching people go through hell it would lose its dramatic appeal if they appeared after 90 mins of every drawn cup game.

This wasn't the usual time killing to get to penalties. Both teams went after it. One just had a much better goalkeeper and defense. Fair play to Atletico. They took it to us in the extra time.

Saw that the Premiership is going to move tomorrow to have the remaining games played without fans and also not allow pubs to show the matches.

Losing because of a keeper's mistakes again would probably hurt a lot more if last year didn't happen, huh?

Oh sure. Today was a wonderful reminder just how valuable Alisson is. Winning last year made today a lot more tolerable. It sucks to lose but Atletico completely outclassed us in extra time, when it mattered. The shame for Adrian was he filled in really well during the early part of the season when Alisson was out. The 2nd goal wasn’t his fault. The defense did him no favors on that one.

Is the Premier League acting unilaterally? The UK government has come out today to say that it’s not considering cancelling public events or ordering the playing of matches behind closed doors. They don’t see the evidence that it has a benefit and don't think the uk is there yet. Whether you agree with that or not is a completely different matter..

Fucking boss move:

@wokeupnew - did you catch any of it?

@wokeupnew and @Joe Mac OK, I want to join in on the guy football chat. So, I'll have to become a fan of a team. Which team should that be and why? Do not advocate for the USMNT, that's just not going to happen. I'd like to follow a team that will have games available to me to watch without having to buy some channel or access to some site. :)

I did! Japan played really well in the second half after they scored. It was pretty tense. I think the US looked head and shoulders above them in the first half and could have had better finishing to put the game away.

LOL now is probably not the time since all the leagues are getting cancelled. But I'd recommend watching EPL because it's what most folks on here follow. Plus commentary will obviously be in English. The games are aired on weekend mornings on NBC/NBC Sports. I don't pay for cable but I use my parents cable subscription to watch via the NBC Sports app on my Roku. I think NBC Sports is available with most basic cable subscriptions.

Other leagues: Bundesliga (Germany) airs on Fox Sports channels, Serie A (Italy) airs on ESPN+. I bundled my Hulu and Disney+ which basically gets you ESPN+ for free. La Liga (Spain) I think you'd need to buy BeinSports or FuboTV or something which is like $50/month. But I think FuboTV would get you pretty much all sports with that package.

Champions League (super cup competition of the top 3-4 teams from each UEFA National league) airs Tuesdays/Wednesdays on TNT/Bleacher Report, times vary. Europa League (super cup competition of lower teams, but still decent from each UEFA league. i.e. EPL has last season's 1-4 places in the table in Champions League, Europa has finishers 5-7) is on ESPN+ too. Airs on Thursdays, times vary.

EPL is very fast and rough, technical. Most of the best players in the world compete here, not just English players. Also very competitive. There's an established big 6 (teams who usually finish in the top spots), but this season everyone is competitive. Liverpool, leaders of the league by far, lost last weekend to 19th placed Watford. There are not guaranteed wins, very competitive.

Bundesliga is very offensive, games averaging over 4 goals scored per game. Semi-competitive, dominated by 1 or 2 teams mostly.

Serie A is very defensive, lower scoring. Dominated by a handful of teams, skews towards older players dominating because the league is slower.

La Liga, very flashy, quick passing (tiki-taka) football but with teams who set up defensively against possession a lot of the time. Dominated by 2 or 3 teams, and those 2 teams are two of the best in the whole world. League has dominated the past 10 years of Champions League and Europa league.

My suggestion would be to watch any of those that you fancy and find a team that you like based on playstyle, competitiveness, players etc. That's what I did when I wanted to get into the EPL.

haha! Well me and @wokeupnew both follow teams in England so that’s often what we’re talking about. I support Manchester United and him Tottenham Hotspur. I’m firmly in the anyone but Liverpool camp so do with that what you will 😂. The big teams that win things are United, Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester City. United have been off the pace for a while now and Chelsea are right now but both are probably too big to eternally fail. Arsenal have been very success historically but have been going through a fallow period the last 15 or so years. Everton have been hugely successful too but have been fallow for nearer 30 years now. Spurs have had a good team the last few years but bottled winning opportunities and are on a steep decline right now. Outside that Leicester play good football and are doing well right now, similar to a lesser extent with Wolves and Newcastle is a frustrating roller coaster of a club. I tend to have some level of knowledge of the other major European leagues too. The Italians love defensive football and the counter. The Spanish love possession which can often be very boring, but when done right is the most entertaining. The Germans are similar to the English in that it’s high paced pressing and attacking but ultimately Bayern win everything whilst England is more competitive.

Yeah, that game was fine. Japan was definitely not playing at the same level. I mean, we didn't start our top goalie or our top defender, Sauerbraun - even though she subbed in at the half. But Franch had some great saves. I thought Spain was our toughest challenge, they looked really good. I laughed when Carli tried again to score from mid field. She drives me crazy. But good goddamn, Press is playing at peak level. And she is so confident and it shows, which is great.

I fear the Ali Krieger will not make the Olympic squad. I don't think she saw even a minute of playing time in this tournament. She's an outside back and a really great defensive outside back. And her leadership on the field is immeasurable. However, the way the US plays their outside backs (Dunn and O'Hara are the starters), they are more offensive and that is not Krieg's strength. :(

It seems like I should jump into the EPL and go from there. Luckily I have my parents log ins for NBC, ESPN and Fox Sports. Thank you and @Joe Mac for the info!

Who are your favorite dude players??

Currently? The best player I’ve seen live is Messi. But only the once. The best I’ve seen regularly live is Cristiano Ronaldo when he was at Utd and I was in Manchester. He is also the best I’ve seen playing for United, but not my favourite. My current favourite United players are Marcus Rashford and the new guy Bruno Fernandes. Outside of United Kevin de Bruyne at city, Hazard at Madrid (formerly of Chelsea) and Van Dijk at Liverpool are hugely impressive players. de Bruyne is a particular favourite of mine, so elegant, an absolute Rolls Royce of a footballer. Historically my all time favourite player is Eric Cantona (my childhood hero), part philosopher, part footballer, part lunatic, always cool as fuck! I loved everything about Paul Scholes too. In a wider context Zidane, Rivaldo and Ronaldo from the 90s are 3 of my all time favourites.

Mine are probably Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane from Tottenham, Messi because he's Messi, Ronaldo is great though, but I fear he only plays well when in a perfect system for him. I also am a fan of Thomas Muller from Bayern Munich and the German National Team and Toni Kroos from Real Madrid and Germany too. My love for football started from watching Germany and stemmed out from that.

This is all excellent and exactly what I want.

My wish is for you all to start spewing out women players' names like this too. :)

Strong disagree with that. At his peak he was at his best on the left in a 4-3-3 and now probably as the left of a spilt front two. But I’ve seen him play effectively on the right and left of a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, as a target man centre forward in a 4-5-1 and in all three forward positions in a 4-3-3 whilst at United. The reality of the situation at Madrid was that his numbers were so frightening that you put him where he wants to be. There has been a very similar situation with Messi at Barcelona.
