It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

I actually didn't know there was anything else like it. Interesting!

In terms of scoring probably not, although there is nothing much similar to Aussie Rules in terms of the weird posts and oval.

In terms of skillset massively. Both games are hugely about fielding the ball aerially.

In fact Ireland are currently the worlds number 1 rugby team with a succession of world class full backs which is lately attributed to shared skill from GAA.

Hmmm….

Maybe on the pitch but whoevet said that

I actually don't remember where it comes from.

American football has this air of a general making complex strategies and tactics to outmaneuver his opponents, and players executing them with precision, but the actual players and coaches are a bunch of brutes that bang heads.

Rugby is more tactical and on the fly with the game itself seemingly more brutal but somehow the players come off as more gentlemanly.

I'm generalizing obviously. There's a reason rugby players have to tape their ears and american football does have intelligent players that adjust on the fly.

Oh it’s a classist thing in England.

Football is a working class game so the players are rougher around the edges as people. Rugby is a middle class game so the antics of the players off the pitch, particularly “on tour” are kinda washed away because the lads present themselves better on tv and don’t abuse the referee…

Rugby is hugely tactical and involves many “set plays”. The difference is the lack of a stop. Rugby is a much more fluid games because a tackle doesn’t stop and reset. It’s funny you say that because I always considered American Football, despite its tactical nature, to be one of the least intelligent team sports. Players don’t have to make decisions on the fly in the same way. The game stops and they have a list of plays and they pick one. It’s not like a fluid game where you have to face whatever is in front of you on the fly and adapt.

American football is pretty much all about drawing up plays and executing them to perfection at lightning speed while the opponent tries to anticipate the calls. There's a big mind game component to it because of that. But then it seems over-complex to me even if I've been familiar with it all my life. It's the main reason I don't think it can catch on much outside the US where there's such an ingrained culture. Sports like Foot, Basketball and Hockey are a lot more natural and easy to grasp, which is why they spread out more, especially Foot.

But in the end, I'm not the best person to speak about American Football with since I've grown away from it since the early 90's. It's not really a big part of our culture here. Most high schools don't have the money to have football programs and if they do it's going to be Canadian rules. Nowadays, if I watch any of it, it's going to be the Canadian game. There's less talent, but it has a more blue collar feel, the rules favor a lot more offense and there seems to be more plays being developed on the fly. But I'm moving away from that too and watching more and more MLS as my second sport after Hockey.

I don’t miss the NFL at all and I was more than content having hockey as my only sport but then football came along. I have to be careful though because I don’t have time to watch more than 2 leagues.

Denmark might be in trouble since Australia got a result today vs Tunisia. Denmark should be beating Australia on the final match day but it’ll be dicey.

"Football combines two of the worst things in American life. It is violence punctuated by committee meetings." - George F Will
