It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Can't wait for the most important game of the weekend tomorrow - Philadelphia Union vs Club Tijuana

Premier League Summer Series is in town and I'm thinking of going on Sunday. I can go to the Fulham v Brentford and Newcastle v Villa double header for about $30 in the nosebleeds. Doubt the stadium will be crowded and will be able to move closer during halftime of the first game.

Also got the Arsenal United friendly tomorrow.

U should definitely go. That's a deal!

Every generation has its greats.
Sports change.

Yeah I agree with this. So does equipment and training and playing surfaces. Can you really compare Messi and Ronaldo to the likes of Pelé and Best who looked like they floated across the ground on mud baths in hobnail boots? Or Cruyff who alongside Michels pretty much changed how football was played? Or Maradonna who was brilliant because he was crazy. I think all we can do is just enjoy it all.

So many variables involved in any sport.
I might have had the energy in my youth to argue endlessly, but it really is so much easier to sit back and enjoy. Unless they’re playing against your team….😁

Never mind across sports and even back the 60s and 70s, football has changed so much even since I started watching circa 89/90. Perhaps it’s more technical and physical but it’s hard to be too harsh on those players, defenders could smash them from all angles and pitched didn’t become year round bowling greens until really 15 years ago.

The game has gained so much from protecting skilful players and having better surfaces but in some ways it’s gone too far, I do miss contact actually being allowed in this contact sport lol.

I’m not sure how much hockey you’ve ever watched, but the NHL has also followed a similar trajectory. While it will always be physical, there has definitely been a focus on the skilled players.

I haven’t watched a whole host. I had a school friend who was big into it so I ended up at a couple of Sheffield Steelers UK games a couple of decades ago but that’s about it.

As there should be to a point. It’s them we pay to see, to a point. There’s also rightly going to be seismic changes to sports that involve heavy collisions, particularly to the head, and for very good reasons. If rugby survives the next 20 years of litigation it will end up as a completely different sport to what it is now.

That does sometimes make me think that perhaps with the better fitness and coaching and pitches and all that protection from the laws that perhaps it’s that bit too easy to waltz through an opponent. Perhaps a bit of the good physicality coming back into it would add to the spectacle. I miss stronger players just being allowed to be stronger and the “ball before man” idea so long as it’s not reckless or out of control.
