More reissues, first two in the "Pink Obi" serie, and great to see Sensational Jazz 1/2 finally reissued :

as someone who is clearly a fan, and I'm glad things are coming into print, I'm getting to a point of overload with a lot of these titles - like do I need another Jiro Inagaki record...probably not, but someone does...anywho, the bottom two are rare as hens teeth and never seen in the wild, so...enjoy

the east wind catalog is ripe for some high-end vinyl reissues, not sure why these aren't seeing the light (same goes for the Kenwood/Trio label) - I was able to buy dozens of these for less than ¥1000 each in perfect condition 5-10 years ago, now they are almost never seen in the bins here (great jazz trio records, still pretty easy to find).

Yeah, I’m lucky enough to have about 20 on vinyl that I’ve bought over the years. Some of my favourite J-Jazz, and those Great Jazz Trio albums are really good as well.

I’ve had two lucky eBay results this week. Hard to say a result is “lucky” when both involved $60 records, but that’s the deal. The first was an auction I posted about earlier this week in the Blue Note thread.

The second is the US version (1973) of “Joe Henderson in Japan,” which I received today. An estate-sale eBay seller had this listed as “buy it now” for $75 OBO with no grade and a couple partial photos of the record that made it look pretty clean. I inquired about grade, and the response was along the lines of, “I’m not a record seller; i can’t give it a grade; it has no scratches.” I made an offer of $60 and explained that, while the photos looked good, they only showed about 1/3 of each side and photos themselves can be deceiving.Offer was accepted, and it arrived today.

Visually, a VG+, but play grades as NM on Side 1 and VG++/EX on Side 2. Really close to perfect.

I’ve wanted this record for a long time but prices were too high for me. Of course, the idea that $60 is a good price for a record is somewhat absurd, but it is for this record at this point. I’m sure at least a few of you have this and paid much less for it, but I can’t relive the past when I could have bought it for a lot cheaper.

Joe Henderson absolutely smokes on this, and I love Joe Henderson, which is why I wanted it to begin with. I already have Henderson/Kikuchi/Hino (and paid a much better price for that one), which I think was performed/recorded the next night. What a fucking tour!!!
I have this too in similar condition, I paid slightly more but it's one of my favorite live recordings and it sounds great so no regrets!

so picked up one of the next batch of TBM reissues, Toki by Hidefumi Toki today - excited for this one as I don't own an original and originals are stupid expensive...and this is "spiritual" in the most listenable way, plus a guitar which tends to soften things a bit to my liking....

so...SQ is real good not great, I just expect more from peak era TBM than this - in no way does this sound bad, it sounds real good, actually... its just not doing any of the things original TBMs do - if there is a way to describe it, its just less 'fresh' still good, and yet, still better than most - I picked up 2 of the first batch and they have a similar sonic signature...is it older tapes, does BGs Tokyo studio have different electronics, who knows, but maybe this is why searching for originals (and I include subsequent Japanese pressings from 70s in this) may be a thing.

still the most interesting of the TBM reissues so far, hopefully they continue to stretch this out.

and remember this is TBM I'm talking about...only comparing to this world, not the normal world..;-)

Damn. Sorry to hear this. I’ll let you know if I learn of another copy.
I guess the book just landed here locally and my copy with it...definitely not cheap, but its pretty stellar, high quality, nice packaging..no idea how to get the cd out of the sleeve in the back, but I have no where to play it so it stays where it is....I like that its their collections and its not all first editions/pressings, photo quality is really nice, titles definitely lean toward out there/free stuff (which is mega rare) lots of focus on serious independent stuff as well, which is beyond mega rare...nice work by the BBE team...they could definitely do volume 2.

Are we sure that Bernie Grandma cut these AAA? I still havent seen anywhere that it actually said Bernie travelled to Japan to cut these aside from a few people claiming so on various forums.

I've been on the fence for so long now about getting a copy. Might have to be one that I put down as a birthday/christmas present as it seems pretty special and quite pricey. Glad to hear the quality is there.

BG has a studio in Tokyo, so makes tapes more likely since not crossing the pacific...but no idea if actually cut from tape

yeah...juice is worth the squeeze on this one, but I do have a pretty excellent collection of record cover artwork books, so couldn't let it pass...

Is there anywhere--import or domestic--that I can bulk-buy the TBM reissues? I can buy them piece meal from various retailers but wanna just scoop up as many as I can in one go.

do you mean the latest ones cut by Bernie? Light in the Attic had a bundle of the first three then had the second batch as individual titles. Was still cheaper to order from CDJapan though I believe even with shipping. Not sure they still have them all in stock though.

should have other titles there too.
