Day 23: “With your chrome heart shining in the sun, long may you run” – Play something about cars.

Wilco - Alpha Mike Foxtrot (Rare Tracks 1994-2014)
“Cars Can’t Escape”

It blows my mind that this song didn’t make the cut for the album, but that just shows how amazing YHF is. This clip is from the movie I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. They may have not gotten along too well, but they made some truly great songs together:

Mike Ness & Social Distortion have opened for Neil quite a few times - notably on the 1991 Ragged Glory tour, but other times too. Never saw Social D open for Neil, but I did sit 2 rows behind Mike at the Greek Theater in LA in 2003 for Neil's Greendale show there (with Lucinda Williams opening).

Love this solo album of his, which has the song "I'm in Love w/ My Car"

Tom Waits - Heart of Saturday Night

Well, you gassed her up, behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one in your Oldsmobile
Barrelin' down the boulevard
Lookin' for the heart of Saturday night

The New Pornographers - In the Morse Code of Brake Lights

This album has about as many car references as you'll get this side of 90s Cake.

Day 24: “I got the revolution blues” – Play something referencing a crime or historical event.

One of Neil's most ambitious songs. A sordid tale of grift, greed and regret...

'Crime In the City (Sixty To Zero Pt. 1)'

Two versions posted here - the official 8+ minute song from Freedom (outstanding) and the 18+ minute original version from a bootleg live videotape (even more outstanding). Enjoy.

Day 24 - crime

Next Stop Soweto

Apartheid was an almighty crime, but black South Africans responded with some wonderful music, as evidenced by these top-notch compilations on Strut. Every one of the four is my favourite but this might be my absolute favourite. Such joyous music.

Kevin Morby - Beautiful Strangers b/w No Place to Fall

This single was inspired by mass shootings in general, but specifically mentions the attacks in Paris in November 2015, as well as the murder of Freddie Gray by Baltimore cops. It was released with proceeds going to the charity Everytown for Gun Safety.

Elliott Smith - Figure 8
“Son of Sam”

After further research, Elliott Smith had said in an interview that this song is not about the serial killer. But I’ve already taken the picture and am halfway through the record so I’ll just argue, how could you not immediately think that this is referencing the crimes with that song title?

Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger

This might be the first Country music Concept Album. The album tells the story of the “Red Headed Stranger” AKA The Preacher who murders his wife, his wife’s lover, and later a yellow haired lady that merely attempts to touch his dead wife’s pony.
