January 2021 Challenge Thread - It's All One Song! And One Raffle!

Day 24: “I got the revolution blues” – Play something referencing a crime or historical event.

U2 - The Joshua Tree

The album closer, "Mothers of the Disappeared" refers to a decades-long, continent-spanning crime: the mass incarceration, torture, disappearance and murder of political dissidents under Latin America's military regimes (often called Operation Condor or "The Dirty War") in the 70s and 80s. The name of the song comes from the Argentine "Madres de la Plaza de Mayo" a group of mothers and grandmothers who protested the disappearance of their missing husbands, sons, and daughters, but Bono says it also refers to mothers mourning the disappeared in Chile and Central America.

Day 23: “With your chrome heart shining in the sun, long may you run” – Play something about cars.

Kraftwerk - Autobahn

I’ve never driven on the autobahn, but the title track certainly makes me feel like I am. Or at least, an idyllic and fantastical version of it.

Day 25: “Everybody’s Rockin’, Rockin’ to the dancing beat” – In the late 80’s Neil got sued for making albums that didn’t sound like Neil Young albums. It’s Opposite Day, play something that was a departure for an artist, or something with an unexpected guest appearance.

Metallica - S/T (aka The Black Album)

For better or for worse, this album was a pretty big departure from the trash metal sound they made their name on. Plenty of people would argue it was a change for the worse. While I prefer their 80’s material, I still really love this album. The songwriting is solid throughout.
