Arthur Lee was charged with illegal possession of a firearm but because of California’s three strikes law (he had prior drug and assault charges), was given a twelve year prison sentence (served 5 1/2). He had been poorly represented in court and if he would have pleaded guilty, would have only been given nine months in jail.
Just after midnight on March 21 1976, David and Iggy were arrested (no criminal record) for possession of marijuana in Rochester NY. This show was recorded 2 days later on the evening of March 23 in Nassau NY.
Jim Morrison famously (and debatably) took it out at a show in Miami. Fun fact - my mother-in-law was at the show, but was too far from the stage (and too high) to confirm or deny the appearance of little Jim.
This is one is just tragic (from the Wikipedia page):
"In 1993, Ol' Dirty Bastard was convicted of second-degree assault for an attempted robberyand in 1994, he was shot in the abdomen following an argument with another rapper.[5] In 1997, he was arrested for failure to pay child support for three of his children.[20] In 1998, he pleaded guilty to attempted assault on his wife and was the victim of a home invasion robbery at his girlfriend's house. He was shot in the back and arm but the wounds were superficial.[21]
In July 1998, only days after being shot in a push-in robbery at his girlfriend's house in Brooklyn, he was arrested for shoplifting a pair of $50 shoes from a Sneaker Stadium store in Virginia Beach, Virginia, although he was carrying close to $500 in cash at the time. He was issued bench warrants by the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Department to stand trial after he failed to appear in court numerous times. He was arrested for criminal threatening after a series of confrontations in Los Angeles a few weeks later, and was then re-arrested for similar charges not long after that. During a traffic stop, the details of which remain clouded in multiple versions of events, he was arrested for attempted murderand criminal weapon possession.[22] The case was later dismissed.[23]
On January 14, 1999,[24] shortly before the killing of Amadou Diallo, two officers from the Street Crimes Unit fired eight shots at Ol' Dirty Bastard and accused him of firing at them after they stopped his car in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Ol' Dirty Bastard was cleared by a grand jury and insisted that the officers had been scared by his cellular phone. No weapons or shell casings (besides those of the officers) were found in the vehicle or near the scene.[25]
In October 2000, he escaped from his court-mandated drug treatment facility and spent one month as a fugitive. During his time on the run, he met with RZA and spent some time in their recording studio. He then appeared onstage at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York drinking from a bottle at the record release party for The W, the third Wu-Tang Clan album. In late November 2000, while still a fugitive, he was arrested outside a South PhiladelphiaMcDonald's (at 29th and Gray's Ferry Ave.), after he drew a crowd while signing autographs. He spent several days in a Philadelphia jail and was later extradited to New York City. A Manhattancourt sentenced him to two to four years incarceration. He was released on parole on May 1, 2003.[27]
Day 9 - "I’m not a crook."
Richard Nixon was born on this day in 1913. Play something by somebody with a criminal record.
Various Artists "Abreast Of Soul" (1969 Pompeii Records)
Playing this for Ike Turner, who received a 4 year conviction for trying to sell cocaine to an undercover police officer in 1987. By all accounts, the guy was a general prick that should have locked up well before that for his treatment of Tina.
Musically, this is a fantastic label compilation from Pompeii records featuring several tracks by Ike & Tina and Fontella Bass, among others. I picked this original copy up at the city wide garage sale in Austin TX while there in 2005. One of the things I remember from that trip is that it was fucking hot. I'm adding a bonus photo of myself, still with a full head of dark hair, showing my purchase. I carried that sheen of sweat for the entire week I was there. My genetics are definitely more attuned to cold weather.
Day 8 - A Starman Waiting in the Sky
Today would have been David Bowie’s 75th birthday. Play some Bowie.
Note to self - if you are going to miss a day, and have to catch up, don't let it be on a Bowie day, cause y'all go deep. Luckily this hasn't been played.
