January 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread :: Plant carrots in January and you'll never have to eat carrots.

Day 4 - FOURplay
Play an artist’s fourth album.

Finally finished the excellent DBT book (Where The Devil Don't Stay), so I'm listening to this with fresh ears. Highly recommend it, ties together the history of the DBT along with the south, and more recently the world.

Day 03: Tolkienism
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on this day in 1892. Play something inspired by Middle Earth.

Shadowfax - Too Far To Whisper

Thankfully no one beat me to it (for the record, my backup play was GBV’s Bee Thousand partially because there is a Wizard on the cover but mainly for the song “Kicker Of Elves”). Anyways has there ever been a better name for a band signed to Windham Hill that makes New Age/New Wave hybrid music than Shdowfax, a name shared with Gandalf’s horse? I think not.

I figured I could count on you for this one!

...I fell way behind on the book, because life. Am still only about 50 pages in. 😬

As someone who lived through the 80's and played mediocre trombone in high school jazz band, I can pretty much guarantee you that there is no way the crowd footage at the beginning of this video is the same crowd at the Shadowfax show. But I was not a big Shadowfax fan. I think I listened more to Spyro Gyra, Free Flight, and of course some Chuck Mangione thrown in for good measure.

Edited to add. My 1500th post was about 80s jazz fusion. Wasn't expecting that.

Ha, I felt like I was pandering a bit here, but I've been on a kick since finishing it. Sat on the shelf for awhile for me too, but finished over Christmas. Was really a fantastic read, I'll post some thoughts over on the Heathens thread later today.

Day 4 - FOURplay
Play an artist’s fourth album.

Agnes Obel - Myopia

Her fourth album of haunting beauty.

Day 4 - FOURplay

Sons Of Kemet – Black To The Future

I originally had something entirely different in mind for today's challenge, then I remembered this was a fourth album and realized how long it would be before I reach it in my reverse alphabetical order by title collection playthrough so I decided to change my pitch up and make a switch up.

Day 02: Nude Belongings
On this day in 1969 New Jersey police confiscated a shipment of John and Yoko’s Two Virgins album as pornographic. Play something that features nudity on the cover.

Herbie Mann - Push Push

Look, Herbie Mann does two things and he does those two things very well; Herbie Mann Flutes and Herbie Mann Fucks. Thankfully, the album art photographer was able to capture him at one of those rare post-fuck/pre-flute moments. Probably on his way to your mom’s fridge to grab a Gatorade.

If you can manage to get this on your turntable blindfolded so the cover image doesn't turn you to a pillar of salt, the record is pretty good.

There's some guitar player on it named Duane Allman...

*I'll adjust the collage to add any latecomers to the thread, or anybody I may have missed by mistake, at the end of the month.
