Day 5: $5 Ford

Michael McDonald
- If That’s What It Takes

featuring guitar solos by Robben Ford (the only Ford in my collection afaik) on “That’s Why” and the title track, the first two tracks on side B. and while I can’t remember how much I paid for this album exactly, I remember getting it for pretty cheap.

Day 6 - Flying V
On this day in 1958 Gibson launched the Flying V guitar. Play something by somebody known for playing a Flying V.

I can't think of anyone who was a greater proponent and played a Flying V more religiously or for a longer period of time than Lonnie Mack.

Lonnie purchased the 7th Flying V to come off the Gibson assembly line upon it's introduction in 1958.

He played it mighty well. This was some pretty wild guitar tone for 1963...

Day 3 - Tolkienism
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on this day in 1892. Play something inspired by Middle Earth.

"Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider" refer to events of the books.

Day 5 - $5 Ford
Play a record you picked up for $5

I have a lot I purchased years ago from thrifts and antique malls, most were under 5 bucks. But this one I know I bought at Plaza Records in Carbondale, IL in the mid 90's.

Records there were all around 5 bucks or less as this was during the big CD boom, vinyl was relatively cheap.

Ramones – Ramones
Sire – SR 6020 NP, 1978

So not a real Flying V, but a repro copy from Electra called a "Flying Wedge". He used it for the first 4 years of the band and then brought it back out to use on Death Magnetic.

Albert King might be a popular pick today! I believe Stevie Ray had a flying V, but maybe not on this record.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers "Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers" (1976 Shelter Records; 2014 Reprise reissue)
Tom Petty was such a fan that he used it as his logo. The 2014 reissue of this, cut by Chris Bellman and pressed at Pallas is great.
