January 2023 Spinning Challenge: Welcome To 2023

Day 11: I Forgot

Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill

I've had this since my early days of collecting vinyl. It's definitely not my favourite of his albums but it was probably the only one in stock at the time. "Twilight" is one of my favourite songs of his, though. Last.fm says the last time I spun this was January 2020.

Day 15: Skint January
It’s midway through January and we’re all bankrupt. Play me something from your backlogue.

Gravediggaz "6 Feet Deep" - I think I just did the check if it's warped or if there's any sound issues by dropping the needle at the beginning and end of each side...I really loved this album when it came out I guess I should listen to it more. I hate the mirrored cover...

Ezra Collective "Where I'm Meant To Be" (2022 Partisan Records)
One of the 2-3 things I still have unplayed from recent orders. My backlogue never gets too big. Sampa The Great and the Fela Kuti sample in track 1 are absolute fire.

Yep, that's the one. I haven't read it yet but plan to very soon!

I need to check that one out, myself. Been a decade or so since I read the two versions I've read. It's the only translated prose book I ever finished and decided I wanted to read multiple translations. I also got to ge part of a staged reading of Edward Kemp's play around that time as well which was awesome.

Nice! Which translations did you read? Did you prefer one or the other? I admittedly didn't do much research on that before I bought this — I'm a sucker for these Penguin Classics Deluxe Editions and I absolutely love this cover. It has been quite a while since I've read any Russian lit so I'm really looking forward to it — too many other books keep getting in the way!

Started my collection playthrough on the What's Spinning thread a few months ago so I'd slow down on purchases and focus / reaquaint myslef with what I do have. Almost halfway through, this one was next on the list:

That cover is pretty stellar. Definitely one of my favourites.
Glenny was the first version I read and then Burgin & O'Connor. Pretty sure at the time I enjoyed the Glenny a bit more, but that may have been sentimentality due to it being my first. Ultimately I enjoyed both. I did no research before going into my reading and only decided after the first one that I wanted to read 'em all. I've read very little Russian fiction besides this one. Pretty sure I read The Idiot in my early twenties, but that's about it. I have read a fair bit of Yevtushenko's poetry though - but that was also mostly 12-20 years ago. That's about it for Russian Lit for me. I should add some to my already obnoxiously large Hope-Stack for this year!

Day 14: 2023
Play me a album by the artist who you are most looking forward to releasing music in 2023.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana (Explorations in Microtonal Tuning Volume 1)

Looking forward to listening to the 17 albums King Gizzard puts out in 2023!
