January 2023 Spinning Challenge: Welcome To 2023

Day 14: 2023
Play me a album by the artist who you are most looking forward to releasing music in 2023.
Julien Baker - Turn Out The Lights
I thought I left my boygenius record out, but I must have packed it as I meant to play it for this challenge. Well either way, I'm super excited to get a full boygenius album in 2023, so here's 1/3 of them.

The National "S/T" - SAD DADS OF THE WORLD GET READY....Ok despite being let down this week we're still getting a new album from The National this year...I mean 2 snippets of music, really? I almost thought about staying up until midnight for that...which didn't even happen at midnight.... refreshing my phone all morning for a password protected website? What am I going to do with that? Burning my daughter's lunch because I'm trying to remember the lessons about hacking I learned from Hackers...Hack the Planet my ass.... I'M IN.... What the shit a book with the tracklist hidden within, I already knew this thanks to the fake sad dad at Amazon and 2 snippets of new songs? That's it?? I'm too old for this shit....wake me up when the album drops....

Say She She "Prism" (2022 Karma Chief / Colemine)
I'll stretch this a little and say that, as with the last few years, I'm looking forward to releases from this label - Colemine Records and Karma Chief. I don't know what's coming out, but I know there will be some great new discoveries like Say She She from 2022. Also, there will certainly be a new Orgone record. I'll be all over that. And a fourth Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio album with a fourth different drummer. Count on it!

With the 400 Unit or without the 400 Unit don't matter to me - I'm always looking forward to more from Jason Isbell. Who is also the artist I'm most looking forward to seeing live in 2023. Finally.

The Hold Steady - Open Door Policy

When this album dropped in 2021 I had kinda moved on from The Hold Steady, the last album of theirs I truly loved was Stay Positive but once I finally got around to giving Open Door Policy a chance, I was happy to have another exceptional Hold Steady album to jam out to. Hopefully their upcoming release this year keep the good tunes coming.

Everything But The Girl - Walking Wounded

EBTG announced their first album in 24 years and I could not be happier. The first single just dropped and it's a banger (do the kids still say that?) Welcome back Ben and Tracey!

I dunno about the kids, but this 40something calls it a certified banger!

That’s the direction I decided to go in too… kinda.

Durand Jones & The Indications - Private Space

Steve Okonski, the keyboardist for DJ&TI, has a solo jazz album coming out next month, with his bandmates Aaron Frazer & Michael Isvara Montgomery backing him up on drums & bass. I’ve liked what I’ve heard of the album so far and I can’t wait to hear more!

Day 11: I Forgot
In memory of me being an absent minded fool play an album from the recesses of your collection that you haven’t spun in so long that you almost forgot you owned it!

I almost bought a second copy a few weeks ago at my local(ish), I opened the discogs app to check the median price and saw I already had one in my collection... 🤦🏻‍♂️

The expanded Ragged Glory, now apparently titled Don't Spook The Horse, was due in 2022. Here's hoping it makes it this year with Weld right behind...

The Strokes - Room on Fire

I haven't been doing the vinyl thing long enough to have forgotten anything, but when I saw this on a pretty good deal recently I picked it up, even though it's been quite a while since I played the CD. It's still a fun one!

Play me some smooth soul music fit for a Friday night.

Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand the Rain

Day 15: Skint January
It’s midway through January and we’re all bankrupt. Play me something from your backlogue.

Seefeel - Quique

This is the year I really start cutting back on vinyl purchasing, I tell myself on January 1st. And then I spend more than I ever have on a cassette because I feel I’m still sticking to my goals, technically.
