January 2023 Spinning Challenge: Welcome To 2023

Day 21: Football
It’s Saturday! As some of you may know I love football (for my American friends not the NFL stuff). Play an album that’s full of great terrace sing alongs.

Fatboy Slim is a 12% owner of the Briighton football club. I'd imagine his songs get used quite a bit at their games.

Probably not "Fatboy Slim is fucking in heaven," though.

Lucinda Williams – You Are Cordially Invited... A Tribute To The Rolling Stones

I don't know how many of these specific songs you'd hear out on the pitch, but I do imagine the Stones have been played at a footie match or two!

Not sure about up in the north, but 'No Control' is only $17.41 on Amazon in the US. It's my 2nd favorite of there's after 'Suffer' too!

Last time I looked at my local everything they had in stock was about $30 a pop, which seems steep -- especially when my early days of getting into punk involved $5-10 brand new compilation CDs with umpteen bands and songs on them -- but I guess that's the new norm!

Other than replacement gifts for a couple of Christmas mishaps I've been holding steady on a No-Buy January+ so I'm not gonna tempt myself by looking right now but will hold out hope when the time comes that I might find a couple of good deals.

What I'd really love is a copy of the box set that came out a dozen years ago with the only official reissue of Into The Unknown but any copies I've looked at over the past year or two are bit rich for my blood!

The Beatles - Help!

I grew up a huge SF Giants fan (they are a baseball team @Joe Mac , a sport played with bats and balls and gloves etc) in no small part for my grandma taking me out of class to go see day games in the middle of the week. One of the memories I have burned in my brain is hearing Ticket to Ride blaring in between innings and the entire crowd singing along with the "She's got a ticket to ri-ri-ride" part no matter the score (the Giants were awful back then so it probably wasn't a great score)

Years later would I actually become a Beatles fan but I will never forget my earliest memories of hearing them at Candlestick Park. Thanks Grandma - I miss you!

I'm with you there on not buying currently as I'm both moving, and shopping for a house. I have enough preorders from last year rolling in to keep the itch going though! I think the new National is the only thing I've bought so far this year.

Blister in the Sun was a staple at Joe Louis Arena before puck drop at Wings games. Lots of singing along. JLA was a great arena, the new one...eh, not so much.

Today's prompt made me think of this...I was 11 when this was getting some play on the Detroit airwaves
"See Billy run, they couldn't catch him with a gun."

So many good memories at the Joe. Loved that place.

Day 17: Smash The System
The world is fucked. Play me a great protest album or an album that is a great call to arms.

Radiohead - Hail to the Thief

Just in case you have not been paying attention, paying attention, paying attention, paying attention...

Day 18: Needles & Grooves AoTM
These are great. More of you should get involved. Play one that was a new discovery that you love. No dupes rule suspended for today.

Dogs Die in Hot Cars - Please Describe Yourself

I haven't kept up with these, so I decided to go look up the list and play one that I'd never heard before for the first time, so I'm experiencing it right now and have no idea if I'll love it, but I'm excited to find out. Picked this one because the name jumped out at me.

What era were you attending? I had the pleasure of being there for a lot of games in the 90s playoffs runs. Never there for a Stanley Cup win though.
Same era. I was at the Joe when we swept the Caps in 98. I only got to go to a couple home games after that, then most of my Wings games were in Colorado or Nashville for the last 20.
