Jazz

I have mentioned this festival a load of times now, but Cross The Tracks has just released the next wave of artists and its going to be insane. Newly added includes:

Madlib (b2b with Gilles Peterson)
Sudan Archives
SEED Ensemble

PLUS

Shabaka & The Ancestors
Steam Down
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
Ashley Henry
Theon Cross
Neue Grafik Ensemble
etc

I thought last year was great but this is going to be insane, especially considering tickets are £25 all in....
I’ve said it before but anyone interested should check out the Seed Ensemble live performance on You Tube. Amazing!

On the subject of books I jus finished Miles and Me by Quincy Troupe. Much shorter than Miles by the same author but offers insights on his relationship with Miles. Seems he had a heart after all.
Oooh thats good to know, im always in the mood for a good jazz book. I picked up the 'Miles Davis: The Definitive Biography' by Ian Carr at a charity shop the other day. Cant see how they could top his Autobiography but I will give it a read anyway.

How did I missed that?

Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela - Rejoice (LP)

‘Rejoice’ is a very special collaboration between Tony Allen, the legendary drummer and co-founder of Afrobeat, and Hugh Masekela, the master trumpet player of South African jazz.

Having first met in the 70s thanks to their respective close associations with Fela Kuti, the two world-renowned musicians talked for decades about making an album together. When, in 2010, their touring schedules coincided in the UK, the moment presented itself and producer Nick Gold took the opportunity to record their encounter. The unfinished sessions, consisting of all original compositions by the pair, lay in archive until after Masekela passed away in 2018. With renewed resolution, Tony Allen and Nick Gold, with the blessing and participation of Hugh Masekela’s estate, unearthed the original tapes and finished recording the album in summer 2019 at the same London studio where the original sessions had taken place.

‘Rejoice’ can be seen as the long overdue confluence of two mighty African musical rivers – a union of two free-flowing souls for whom borders, whether physical or stylistic, are things to pass through or ignore completely. According to Allen, the album deals in “a kind of South African-Nigerian swing-jazz stew”, with its roots firmly in Afrobeat. Allen and Masekela are accompanied on the record by a new generation of well-respected jazz musicians including Tom Herbert (Acoustic Ladyland / The Invisible), Joe Armon-Jones (Ezra Collective), Mutale Chashi (Kokoroko) and Steve Williamson.

I assume everyone is hip to Varech and Amir?
Funnily enough I only have the third of the trilogy on wax, 'À Cordes Et À Cris'. I have listened to Varech and Amir quite a bit in the past though, fantastic albums!

Varech and Amir are amazing, and the current reissues are stellar, but also check out his most recent output that are also great, with Sand Woman reimagining somes tracks from his first trilogy :

Mr Bongo shared this on their Facebook page. I ordered a copy

Originally a dig from the legend himself DJ Shadow, The Bongo crew first encountered The Jazz Minstrels' 'Poopin' The Sloop' when it was played by DJ / record collector Michael Barnes in Los Angeles. Michael had picked up 'Party' at the DJ Shadow Rappcats pop-up and was keen to know if we had heard it before. It was new to us, however, we are now super happy to be able to offer deadstock copies of this mysterious gem from 1980.

The records were sealed but we have opened to check the vinyl. Head over to
Michael's Melting Points blog for a great review/lowdown and sound clips of this record.

Just got a shipping notification for this, a month before release date.
Ooh. Haven’t gotten a notification for mine yet but I’m anxiously awaiting this album. It's saying on bandcamp that mine isn't due to be sent until March though!

@radiodead - seems like they fixed the shipping on the Jeff Parker over on bandcamp. Back down to $4.

Edit: Doh but it’s sold out now. Was still in my cart.

Ooooooh this sounds fun. Super east for me to get to as well (im 5mins walk away) so I will definitely look into this! Cheers @Skalap

Edit: Arghhhhh im away that weekend. Well worth seeing Sons Of Kemet, I saw then last summer and they were amazing. And luckily for me Shabaka and the Ancestors are part of a festival im going to in this coming summer......phew!

Also, tickets for the Barbican are £17.50 to £20 which is a complete bargain IMO

The Heliocentrics - Infinity of Now

The UK’s cosmic, psychedelic-funk ensemble issue their first album on maverick producer Madlib’s label, Madlib Invazion. The Heliocentrics’ albums are all confounding pieces of work. Drawing equally from the funk universe of James Brown, the disorienting asymmetry of Sun Ra, the cinematic scope of Ennio Morricone, the sublime fusion of David Axelrod, Pierre Henry’s turned-on musique concrète, and Can’s beat-heavy Krautrock, they have – regardless of the label on which they’ve released their music - pointed the way towards a brand new kind of psychedelia, one that could only come from a band of accomplished musicians who were also obsessive music fans.

The album they did with Mulatu is awesome. Also they one they did with Lloyd Miller.

It's been a busy month, so I haven't been updating the N&G Jazz Reissues spreadsheet as much as I would like to. But the info should be up-to-date now.

A couple of notes:

1) In case it wasn't clear before, I don't get any kickbacks for purchases made through the spreadsheet. I pulled the spreadsheet together just so I could keep track of all the great Blue Note reissues that came out in 2019 - and I thought other folks might be interested as well.

2) I split the reissues into 2019 and 2020 tabs just to simplify things a bit.

3) I realize the 2020 SRX inventory is rather fluid right now - I'll try to monitor the Blue Note thread to keep the spreadsheet current when there are inventory changes.

4) Beyond the Tone Poets and SRX titles, there are some interesting jazz reissues coming out in 2020 (just like every year!). I've decided to add some of those titles to the spreadsheet when I hear about them. If there are other significant jazz reissues you would like me to add throughout the year - just dm me or tag me in a post.

5) Again, Target has become pretty price-competitive with Amazon - so I'm trying to use Target links whenever possible. (Their HQ is in Minneapolis - so yes, I'm being a homer.) Target has struggled with inventory at times, so when they are OOS, I'll switch back to the Amazon.

6) There are some reissues that are not showing up on Target or Amazon. I generally try to track them down on Dusty Grooves, Plaidroom or Acoustic Sounds.

Hope that helps. Peace and empty wallets in 2020!

You’re a saint, no pun intended. Amazing resource and thanks so much for the time and effort you put into it.
