Just going to share my thoughts on a box set I picked up the other day -
Django Reinhardt - Django. Its a 8LP box set released on the Affinity label and includes a 31-page booklet (its an impressive addition with lots of content).
@dropsonde mentioned he would like to have my thoughts on it so I will just jot a few points down here.
Firstly, I went in on this as someone who has heard very little of Django's music, in fact all I knew about him was that he played music which is referred to as 'gypsy music' (I didn't even know what this sounds like either). The booklet is a great help in this regard (although I have not properly read all of it) and breaks down the content into the guitarist's life, musical style, recordings, etc. Towards the back is a track listing, with a separate, more detailed listing of each recording date, group members, soloists, etc. I'm only a couple of records in at the moment, but I'm really enjoying it. His music is certainly unique and really holds up well in my opinion, it certainly doesn't sound as dated to me as Swing or Dixieland. Unlike some of the early recordings of other musicians, such as Charlie Parker, the audio quality here is superb. I honestly didn't realise how old some of these tracks were (the first is 1936) as the quality is that good. Well worth picking up if box sets are your thing, I picked this up for £17 and its well well well worth that price.
