Jazz

Yea--those are the two I meant. I have a feeling that Amazon isn't going to match as many this time around...And I assume Target doesn't internationally ship? They had just about every TP so far.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) they don't. I keep an eye open on Amazon just in case, there are a few interesting Prince reissues.

The Queen box set was really intriguing for me too but I held firm and didn't buy it and now it's gone from Amazon. Would have worked out to something like $250 for the studio box set.

I see you can be worst than me with these kind of sales.
haha I caved yesterday and got two MoFi One Steps in the sale so that was my big purchase. I sat out on the BNs because while I love them and the quality, I find myself only going back to the same two or three and have some I realized the other day that I haven't even opened yet and I am pretty much out of shelf space at this point.

Just going to share my thoughts on a box set I picked up the other day - Django Reinhardt - Django. Its a 8LP box set released on the Affinity label and includes a 31-page booklet (its an impressive addition with lots of content). @dropsonde mentioned he would like to have my thoughts on it so I will just jot a few points down here.

Firstly, I went in on this as someone who has heard very little of Django's music, in fact all I knew about him was that he played music which is referred to as 'gypsy music' (I didn't even know what this sounds like either). The booklet is a great help in this regard (although I have not properly read all of it) and breaks down the content into the guitarist's life, musical style, recordings, etc. Towards the back is a track listing, with a separate, more detailed listing of each recording date, group members, soloists, etc. I'm only a couple of records in at the moment, but I'm really enjoying it. His music is certainly unique and really holds up well in my opinion, it certainly doesn't sound as dated to me as Swing or Dixieland. Unlike some of the early recordings of other musicians, such as Charlie Parker, the audio quality here is superb. I honestly didn't realise how old some of these tracks were (the first is 1936) as the quality is that good. Well worth picking up if box sets are your thing, I picked this up for £17 and its well well well worth that price.

I’m a fan of Django’s but don’t actually own anything of his on vinyl! If you like this, check out Joe Pass’ album For Django. It’s coming out as a Tone Poet I believe at some point but you can find older pressings for pretty cheap.

Thanks for posting this. I had literally just ordered Getz/Gilberto from Acoustic Sounds at $39 after shipping. I was able to Preorder via Target, get two additional records (Vampire Weekend - FOTB & Radiohead - HTTT) and it came to < $50, and AS let me cancel my order with them.
Somewhat comprehensive list of solid jazz titles in the Target Buy Two Get One Free sale going on right now. All sorts of price ranges. Cheapest item is free in each batch of 3, free shipping in the US over $35. The Acoustic Sounds reissue series preorders are also included in this sale. I probably missed some though.

Nice! Great choices. I got Father of the Bride from a really cheap amazon accideal awhile back and I am surprised at how much I have listened to it on vinyl.

Thanks for the thoughts (and extra pics of the booklet). Not many people realize the influence he had on modern guitar playing, especially with respect to his speed and technique. Much of his output was on 78s but a lot has been reproduced on LPs with solid quality as you mention. His recordings with Quintette du Hot Club de France are classic but I enjoy a lot of his solo work where he explores more styles of playing.

My favorite Reinhardt record in my collection is Toutes Les Cordes De Django Reinhardt - Enregistrements De 1928 À 1946. It spans from one of his earliest known recordings he made with a trio of accordionists (“Ma Régulière”) up through 1946 before he made his first tour of the US at the peak of his popularity. A great sampling of his work. I love the poignant closeup of his skilled left hand that was burned when he was a teenager, which compelled him to adapt and develop his fretwork skill, on the cover.

I found a copy in near-perfect condition at a record convention for $10. A bargain for the amount of enjoyment I’ve gotten from it.

@Skalap - I see 5 TPs now. Chick Corea - Now He Sings (low on stock), Turrentine - Comin Your Way, Andrew Hill - Black Fire, Mobley - Poppin and Herbie - The Prisoner. And lots of BN80s.

Thanks. I ordered Turentine, Mobley and Hancock records.

Edit:
Joe Henderson - State of the Tenor Vol 1 & 2 are there too. Vol 2 is the TP reissue but Vol 1 is part of the not so popular 75th anniversary reissue campaign.

A new Nubya Garcia album is due on August 21th according to Amazon.fr. Source seems to be a 2xLP with a total of 9 songs.

Something else to look forward too
Oh man oh man oh man!!! Cant wait for these! Out of interest, has anyone got the Steeplechase comp from Jazzman? If so, what do you think of it? I'm assuming it's great (they usually are and can't go wrong with Steeplechase)
